5-0 out of 5 stars Especially commended to students of engineering
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Radiative Heat Transfer by Michael F. Modest is a college-level mechanical and chemical engineering textbook, specifically written and intended for advanced students already familiar with basic calculus. Individual chapters address radiative exchange between a variety of surfaces; equations, functions, and methodologies; the influence of conduction and convention, and much, much more. An advanced resource and an excellent text or supplement to engineering education, Radiative Heat Transfer is especially commended to students of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A big disapointment!
Although the book overviews many topics in cosmology, it seems an excersise in personal interests of the writer. The results are often not directly applicable to "real-life" situations and rewritting offormulae is usually required. Personally, I would recommend the book"Cosmological Physics" by Peacock, which is much more transparentand up-to-date. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reaching for the stars
In this attractively produced book, Malcolm Longair, Head of the Cavendish Laboratory, recounts the development and spectacular successes of astrophysics and cosmology.Although the focus throughout is on high theory, the math tends to be confined to 'explanatory supplements' tacked onto the ends of chapters, with the result that general readers familiar with the basic concepts of physics and astronomy will be able to follow the narrative without difficulty.(Others would do well to begin with Bernard Schutz's marvelous book, Gravity from the Ground Up.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Interpreting the Bible so that it fits science
This book is full of a lot of great scientific information, however the author's real purpose is to fudge both science and the Bible so that it appears they are one in the same. The author says in the first chapter that he will not try to fudge the Bible so it fits with science yet that's all he does throughout the entire book. His connections are unlikely to convince the average intelligent reader. But don't take my word for it, if you chose to read this book then try this: After every conclusion he makes about the Bible and Science ask yourself 'Does this evidence support the idea that the Bible is true, or is it merely a way of reading the Bible so that it loosely fits scientific fact'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Excellent book attempting to reconcile science and bible. Readers should be cautioned that some familiarity with quantum mechanics and relativity are helpful but not required. Recommended especially for those with science background who have not read the bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars "The Science of God"
This is the most brilliant book I have ever read.It literally made me see stars! How many books do that for you?The author is extremely intelligent and has researched the subject intensely. He explains how the Bible AND science are both correct regarding the origin of the universe and life.It is a great way to reconcile ideas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing value
I participated in a beta test of the photometry software program and proof-read a draft of this excellent book. The book alone is worth the price, but the amazing value is the powerful software package included, AIP4WIN. It does so many image processing tasks- photometry, astrometry, spectroscopy, color pictures, image sharpening - with several deconvolution routines. This is much more than a toy (but you certainly can have fun with it) as it supports routine image processing of hundreds of images per night. The software alone is worth several times the price of the book. Anyone interested in putting a CCD camera to serious work - or serious fun - will certainly get their money's worth with this package! Berry and Burnell have a really excellent effort here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpice!
When you see a "coffee table" book like this, you sometimes wonder about whether the writing is going to match the pictures, but with people like Michael Hoskin, Christopher Cullen and Owen Gingerich writing the text, you know that this one is going to be a winner even before you open it. Let me just say that the pictures and the desing in fantastic, and that the writing is at a level suitable for the general public without being "dumbed down". Trust me, you're going to enjoy this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and illustrated
This is the single best history of astronomy I've ever encountered. Not only is the narrative interesting, the pictures--from William Herschel's journal pages describing his discovery of Uranus to full-page illuminations of the Cartesian cosmology--enhance the experience even more than one mightexpect. At less than ( ), this book is a must for any astronomy buff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage of the history of astronomy
An excellent survey with both breadth and depth, covering non-European astronomy (for example the Dresden Codex - a Mayan calendar), the difficulties of the Geo-centric model, the development of the telescope, modern astrophysics, up to the Hubble Space Telescope. Includes a greatmany sidebars with much peripheral information (I did not know thatHerschel was an organist by trade). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A True Story of Miracle Healings
I enjoyed reading the book. The book was suggested to me by a friend. The writer confirmed much of what I have already come to understand and believe. However, the writer also provided additional information and methodology for developing and practicing the concepts. The book met my expectations and I have already passed it along to someone else I think would enjoy reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Nuclear Age
100 Suns is the best collection of nuclear test pictures in one volume that I've seen. The descriptions of the blasts are interesting and factual, and are in the back of the book so as not to detract from the pictures themselves. There is also a good chronology of weapons development in the back of the book. If you have any interest in seeing what the awesome power of splitting or fusing atoms looks like, this is your book. This is a most unusual coffee table book which should start many fun conversations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of art
A great compilation. I have this on my coffee table next to a copy of Light's "Full Moon" and both are fantastic. Every page deserves to be framed and hung on a wall.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Basics and More
This book will be very helpful to pilots who want an "intuitive" understanding of aerodynamics. It will allow them to apply the information that is only touched on in other beginning piloting texts. I am considering using it as a textbook for a community college pilot technology curriculum. His explanation of wing lift does not emphasize Newton enough and seems to over emphasize Bernoulli, but this is not intended as a highly technical or mathematical approach. It is real world information for the pilot.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for pilots and aircraft homebuilders
I found Skip Smith's book to be an excellent layman's introduction to aerodynamics. Fluid mechanics does not usually make for interesting, easily comprehensible reading, but Dr. Smith's book is clearly the exception.I'mconstantly irritated by the very inaccurate descriptions of aerodynamicsgiven in many flying magazines and instructional books. This book hasnoneof those common errors. Reading this book should greatly increase theaverage pilot's knowledge of how his plane flies and what huge designconstraints aeronatical engineers have to live with. Highly recommendedreading for all those who are interested in learning more about theprinciples of flight.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, simple and comprehensible
Unless one has considerable experience interpreting mathematical formulae, it may be worth their while to consider a book such as this before reading a university level aerodynamics textbook. The textbook will be made somewhat more comprehensible knowing the basic principlew which a more descriptive book, such as this one, can teach simply. Most textbooks in the subject, even those meant as introductory, give a painfully mathematical and theoretical treatment with insufficient verbal explanation. They are meant for complete school courses, where a teacher can qualitatively describe the physical principles. 5-0 out of 5 stars Rock your world view w Voyagers series
Ever felt like you didn't quite fit on planet earth with the mind numbing, never-ending routine of trivia that fills up our lives? Not to mention the obvious dirth of information about why we are here, where we came from and where we might be headed. If this even remotely describes feelings that you have struggled with most of your life then do yourself a favor and buy this book. It is intense, complex and sometimes difficult to read but if you stick with it you will be rewarded. This book will definitely help you decrease your level of ignorance about yourself and life on the planet - you can replace tired and worn out stories about human history with a good solid knowledge about what really happened. GK - Los Angeles

5-0 out of 5 stars Let it speak for itself...
I have looked high and low through countless new age books and Voyagers was the first book that really fofilled my sense of longing. After every other book I had read, I found myself still searching, but after Voyagers, I no longer needed to search. That is not to say that everything you ever needed to know can be found in this book, it is more of an introduction to a larger body of work where you can find information on everything you wanted to know, and then some. If you are genuinely looking for answers, then don't take my word for it, or any one else's for that matter... just read it for yourself and decide for yourself if it is right for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars amazing engineering feats
You can think of this as a course in very specialised antenna design. Certainly, the broad concepts would be immediately recognisable to any engineer who has built antennas. But here the sources that are being detected are at far reaches indeed. Correspondingly, the sizes of each radio dish far exceeds your typical antenna in industrial or military use.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks
Have you forgotten a formula?More than likely it is contained in this book.It has formulas for everything from all disciplines of science and engineering including astrophysics, e&m, fluid mechanics, and series and expansions. But all you get is the formula and what the letters mean, you will need to know how to use the formula. This is one of my most cherished books.

This book is one of the best, and I mean best, purchases I have ever made.It provides clear, consistent tables of physical values and equations, which can be a godsend in a land of inconsistent, confusing, and sometimes odd notation. Also useful is its Rosetta Stone-esque conversion table, which shows the values of myriad measures (including the US and UK values of the firkin, should one ever need to know,) into nice, clean SI units. The comprehensive index and well-organized sections make finding the proper equation easy as well.5-0 out of 5 stars Best phisics-math reference of formulas
