5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this before you buy a telescope!
Excellent overview of current offerings, along with something rarely found - specific recommendations.A must have before making an initial investment in a telescope, eye pieces, or other accessories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant trilogy
This has got to be the best and most comprehensive book on everything to do with astronomical equipment. Reading all three editions not only fully equips you with the knowledge on which scope (or binoculars) is best for your needs, but also serves as a "historical" overview of scopes from the past. What I especially liked about the book is that it has exhaustive reviews of scopes and they are split into different categories and brand names (yup brand names and makes are mentioned in the book). Also has a homemade astronomer section that is veryuseful. Plus, in the 1st and 2nd edition, there is a section on observing (with eyepiece impression sketches). I was disappointed that this section was left out in the third edition but then this spawned Phil's other book "Starwatch". Highly recommended!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not such a stretch if you Think!
Mr. Sitchin has nothing to gain by espousing pseudoscience or pseudohistory. He would only stand to lose. Ancient History as a discipline has been proclaimed true to a great extent by proclamation that the "ancients"told us all. This is all well and good as a baseline. I have no quarrel with Herodotus or Tacitus.1-0 out of 5 stars Shame on Avon and Amazon.com
Do not buy the mass market edition. Shame on Avon Publishing!!!The type is so small that it is virtually unreadable, and any graphics, maps or diagrams cannot be distinguished.Pay the extra money to buy the edition published for Earthlings, not for Lilliputians. 1-0 out of 5 stars If only I could read it....
I might like this book, but I'll never know because it's in 4 point type--the size of footnotes. It's totally unreadable! Shame on Avon for cheaping out to cram this into 328 pages by making the type microscopic. Buy some more paper and print a readable book, people!!... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sprawling encyclopedia of rockets
In 360 B.C., Archytas of Tarentum made a model pigeon that flew by flowing steam out its tail. A humble beginning, perhaps, but it's the first entry in The Dream Machines, and it should give you some idea of just how comprehensive this book is. Every rocket I've ever seen or heard of is in here, fact or fiction, and for every one I knew about beforehand there are probably a hundred that I didn't know about until I found this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference for Space Craft Fanatics!
I can't believe how fantastic this book is! I got it for christmas and have a hard time putting it down. Considering the weight of this encyclopdiac work that's saying something. Pound for pound worth it's weight in gold or platinum! Only a few notable omissions that I would have liked to see (ie. "The Valley Forge" fromDouglas Trumbull's "Silent Running" ) Probably the most amazing relvelation is that many current designs have thier genesis back in the late 40's ! Truly a must have for anyone who dreams or dreamedof interplanetary voyages!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dream Machines
Exellent book for any rocket or sci-fi enthusiast. The illustrations and drawings bring home man's facination with the heavens.I have read numerous publications concerning rocketry, and by far this is the best book I have yet to see published to date.I was blown away by the sections, 'The Archaeology of the Spaceship', and 'The Experimenters'.All dealt with rocketry ante-WWII.There are also page after page of NASA concept vehicles that were never flown, including several pages of Apollo and Space Shuttle designs that did not make it to the lauch pad, but yet look like they are ready to just rocket from the page. This book would be a great source of information for those who scratch build model rockets. Color illustrations, 3 view diagrams, an appendix of U.S., Soviet, and international lauch vehicles; what more could one want? If I could only own one rocket book, this would be the book I would chose over all the rest!Buy this book, heck buy 2 and give one to a friend! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great - Simply Great
As I look at a beautiful new astronomy book like this one, I am reminded of Galileo who was sentenced to be shown the implements of torture and then confined under house arrest for the remainder of his life for publishing that the sun went around the earth rather than the other way around. Galileo's first telescope was probably about eight power, about standard these days for binoculars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Astronomy Text
This is a great introductory Astronomy text.It is easy to understand and learn the material presented. There are magnificent photos and easy to understand illustrations for those who are visual learners.I recommend it to anyone wanting to just have an understanding of the subject, whether in an educatinal setting or just wanting to learn it on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cosmos: Astronomyin the New Millennium
This is a five-star book! Designed as a textbook for basic astronomy courses, it also serves as a stand-alone book for the average person who wants seriously to find out more about the universe. The content is clear and easy to follow, moving from the earth through the solar system, stars, galaxies, black holes, quasars, and finally issues of cosmology. Pages are well laid-out for easy reading, and enhanced with beautiful four-color photos and diagrams. Each chapter concludes with a concept review and questions for reflection. Help in learning terminology is provided by boldfaced vocabulary throughout the book and a glossary at the end.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great meteorite reference
This is a fantastic reference to meteorites. Large, beautifully bound and with great colour images and illustrations. Norton certainly knows his subject and takes us on a cosmic jouney, from black rocks found in the desert to a time before the formation of the solar system. There is plenty of technical and scientific details to feed the mind of the most educated reader. He explains concepts like radio-isotope dating with a clarity lacking at many eductional institutions today. Highly recommended for all those with an interest in space or astronomy and the growing number of meteorite collectors out there. My only minor criticism is that the font used in the book could have been a little bolder and easier to read for my aging eyes. Norton deserves a 10/10 for this fine effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, but...
This is the best work I've read on the solar system, period. The text is wonderful but I dearly wish the author had included the American measuring system along with the metric one. I'm one of those old fogies who has to cogitate in the extreme in order to convert kilometers into miles. Oh, well.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent layman's reference to solar system astronomy
Don't buy this book thinking it will be an entertaining reference for your twelve-year-old nephew who enjoys astronomy. This hefty tome is more akin to a college-level textbook than an encyclopedia. If you want to get adetailed, but not overly technical, overview of modern solar systemscience, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A legacy!
Following a thematic progression, ranging outward from the Sun to other planetary systems, the Encyclopedia of the Solar System details the dynamics of motions and rotations, solar wind, planetary, geologic, andatmospheric conditions, as well as other processes in the formation ofplanets, satellites and the smaller bodies of our planetary environment. The Encyclopedia covers the latest observations employing planetary radar, radio, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner Book
This book immediately draws you in and teaches you the basics. The first few chapters are really easy to read and understand. It does get harder at the end but by then you're hooked. I read this one before moving on the FAA manual. If I had started with the FAA manual I would have been completely lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to fly helicopters
Learning to fly helicopters is an undertaking unlike no other. It is more of a calling, actually. And a huge commitment of time, money, and energy. Mr. Padfield understands this. He knows what it feels like to learn, get scared, become frustrated, and he helps the reader through it all with warm humor and inspiration. The text is clear and readable with many helpful illustrations. This is a great book to read as you study, to refer to as a beginning pilot, or to refresh your memory with. This book is unlike the majority of instructional volumes which are very dry and where the authors either talk down to the reader or lapse into technical jargon. Learning to fly helicopters is fun to read and very helpful
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, well-written, and an all-around fun book
I read this book before I started my helicopter training justabout two years ago.Since then, I have bought and read just about every book about rotary-wing aircraft that I can get my hands on.This book is fundamental in nature, but fairly complete none the less and an absolute joy to read.I recently read it again and loved it more than when I first picked it up.Of all the helicopter books I have read this one is still by far my favorite. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A mind expanding book-Top notch!
Dr. Mack is brilliant in this book!He is most interested in how a person's life changes as a result of their anomolous experiences, mainly encounters with other worldly beings. These "experiencers" seem to have a jump start on the rest of us mortals, in terms of understanding the vastness of which we come from, and which we will return. An excellent book for anyone seeking to get closer to the TRUTH.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile read, but flawed conclusions.
Mack's done an overall good job pretaining to the UFO/abduction phenomena.I take exception however to his take home message that most if not all of the abduction experience is actually directly related to alien abduction and moreover that the aliens are benevolent and have our best interests at heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enemies?Or Friends?
These many reviews are interesting. It seems that the negative reviewers are offended at the idea - the very idea! - that aliens might actually be helping humanity. No, such reviewers seem more comfortable with the idea that aliens are out to destroy humanity, no doubt about it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the New out of New World
The Lost Realms is one of the most speculative and interesting books in Sitchin's Earth Chronicles series. The ruins and structures of Egypt and the Near East have been wondered at and studied for centuries, and there is a veritable wealth of information from Near Eastern papyri, stelae, monuments, and similar artifacts. The ruins of Mesoamerica have largely been rediscovered only in the past couple of hundred years; indeed, unknown wonders surely remain hidden by South America's dense jungles. The immensely important records and artifacts of New World societies such as the Mayan, Inca, and Aztec civilizations were for the most part lost and destroyed at the hands of greedy Spanish conquistadors, and further site degradation has resulted from the pilfering of ancient stones by recent natives of the area for use in the construction of their own buildings. Thus, the earliest history of the lower Americas remains frustratingly impossible to understand. We are left with giant edifices with significant similarities to Near Eastern constructions in size, orientation, and purpose, many of them seemingly containing very advanced structures built for unknown purposes.Even the age of the artifacts is hotly debated, with many scientists refusing to believe scientific findings point back to as early as 2000 B.C.5-0 out of 5 stars The Lost Realms
There are many pieces of the puzzle of our existence in the universe that I had figured out, or "seen", but there were still dots that I could not connect, gaps I could not fill in. When I read this book it was like deja vu, a recollection of things stored in our genetic memory/code long forgotten through evolution, now recalled causing gasps of recollection. This book logically and scientifically filled in the gaps. It makes sense, it all fits. Sitchin's bibliography to support his research is tremendously extensive and impressive. I recommend it highly for the searching mind, and have given copies as gifts to many friends and associates.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best Sitchin book so far.
Although I have difficulty with some of the pat answers Mr. Sitchin gives in this book, I think that it has the most solid scholarship I've seen in any of his writings to date.I would also recomend Micheal Cremo's "Forbiden Archeolgoy." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A well written and practical textbook
I purchased this book primarily to gain some basic understanding of kalman filtering, but have found the book so interesting and engaging that I have taken the time to rewrite the code to pascal and run the examples etc, as presented in the book. Being a systems engineer by education, but not by profession, the approach used in the book allowed me to apply some of my previous but unused training very efficiently.
5-0 out of 5 stars information
Although I am disappointed in the second reviewers comments he is wrong concerning the code. Complete code is presented in the text and is on CD for all of the examples. Readers can now make up their own mind before purchasing the text. If you go to the Google Book Search and type in Zarchan you will be able to read the entire text. I suggest people who have previously been terrified of Kalman filters and want to learn how to build one, read the Introduction and possibly the second Chapter to see if the text meets their needs and is in accordance with their individual learning styles. I know that many readers have found the text useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This book builds up the concepts needed to understand Kalman filtering from very basic ideas like least squares, and tries to keep things grounded in practical examples. It is, as advertised, the practical approach, totally unpretentious, and clearly written.

Editorial Review

How many dimensions do you live in? Three? Maybe that's all your commonsense sense perception perceives, but there is growing and compelling evidence to suggest that we actually live in a universe of ten real dimensions. Kaku has written an extraordinarily lucid and thought-provoking exploration of the theoretical and empirical bases of a ten-dimensional universe and even goes so far as to discuss possible practical implications--such as being able to escape the collapse of the universe. Yikes. Highly Recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read science
Humankind dreams control time and space. This holistic superstring plain mathematical theory aproaches reality in this amazing book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating glimpse into the future of physics
Kaku attacks some very difficult subjects in Hyperspace. Subjects usually reserved for theoretical physicist and mathematicians.Kaku not only adeptly conveys these supremely difficult subjects in a way that the average reader can understand, but also takes the reader on a well organized and engaging journey through the theory of everything. If you have ever wondered if time travel will ever be possible, if other dimensions exist, or if humans will ever live on other planets in other galaxies then this book is for you.It will give you the theoretical physicist's point of view on these mysterious subjects. This book is supremely informative and wonderfully entertaining.I gave it 4 1/2 stars instead of five, because of the last Chapter which was contrived and superfluous.
3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and not broken down enough for non-science people
The book is a bit outdated, as to be expected, and does not include M theory, the theoretical, incomplete theory unifying the many string theories. The book used too many technical terms without explaining them in depth. As the pages went on these terms built up until I was pretty lost.I just figured it was due to the complexity of the subject but then I research it online and find a very short webpage that described things wonderfully. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DEATH TO CONSUMERISM
Brian Schwimme has an archaic nostalgia. For thousands, even millions, of years, people have united together to marvel at the mystery of the cosmos and contemplate the essence of it all.It was the same macrocosm that each and everyone of the primitive cave dwellers to modern man have directly experienced. But nowadays, we don't do that.We disenchant the world by scientific explanations that view the universe as a machine, to the point where the mathematical explanations of phenomena are more significant than phenomena itself. You might be thinking, no way, the majority of the world is religious, and contemplate such things regularly. He points out that the problem with modern day religious thought is that when we ponder the deep questions of meaning in the universe, we do so in a context fixed in the time when the classical scriptures achieved their written form, rather than worshiping in the context of the universe as we have come to know it over the recent centuries.Such knowledge is restricted to "science" which is at odds with religion. It shouldn't be like this. The Scientific Revolution was an age of this separation. The current cosmology calls for an age of integration.I am all for this goal of striving for a new consciousness.Within our Newtonian minds, we've built such tiny worlds like this, which resulting from the machine view of a dead universe, we apotheosize and deify consumerism. This book doesn't bicker about God or anything that people don't want to hear, it's just saying, "Wake up from this man made world, cast back the veil from your eyes, be at one with this LIVING fecund universe!"You will truly be LIVING in the world once you appreciate the heart of the cosmos, which all though is around 15 billion light years away, is also every where at once. There is no restriction to science. The new cosmology is what has mystified the men of all ages, what they spoke of as the Tao, or the Logos - the emanating source of all creation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A much needed vacation from humanities molded reality
I personally found this book both extremely inspiring and enjoyable to read. Swimme's method of unveiling the truth about advertisments and consumerism and how they shape our veiw of reality is ingenious. At thesame time, the book takes you on a scientific journey of the universe thatincorporates feelings of mystical awe and wonder that many books fail toacomplish. I have read everything from Fred Wolfe to Brian Greene. However,Swimme envokes a deeper feeling of appreciation for science, the workingsof our universe, and humanity in general. All his books, especially thisone, have something new to say and add a human touch to science that islong overdue. This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill new age book andI recommend it to anyone who is passionate about preservation of theenvironment or just plain curious about new ideas concerning reality andthe world we live in.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent but not outstanding book by Brian
This book falls somewhere between the cerebral 'Universe Story' and thepoetic 'The Universe is a Green Dragon'.Brian is struggling to bring thebeauty and feeling of the universe into perspective with the consumerismwhich rules the day.If you had to pick a single book by Swimme, it wouldbe 'The Universe is a Green Dragon' ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Amateur Astronomy Manual
I find this book to be the best all-round manual for beginning and experienced amateur astronomers. It has great explanantions for the range of natural phenomena in the sky. The authors make them very accessible and easy for the general reader (ones who know little about astronomy). Their tips for observing the universe are great and useful. I hope they will update their book soon; the telescope advice is out of date. Go to telescopes and CCD astronomy are more common and inexpensive. Even so, the book is highly recommend as a manual for the amateur astronomer. If astronomy clubs are starting a library, this is the first book they should buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding for beginning to intermediate astronomers
This is one of the few books you can put in the hand of a novice and say "This is It!"It is comprehensive and informative in all areas of amateur astromomy from choosing the best telescope (one that you will use, not necessarily the most expensive) for your goals and objectives, to finding all manner of planets, stars, nebulas, and other objects in the night sky.It even covers astrophotography and the equipment necessary to take the pictures you desire.I found this book very informative and helpful and its price will definitely save you a bundle in mispurchased equipment if you follow the advice of the authors. An excellent, easy-to-read book for all amateur astronomers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall a great guide, an asset to most astronomers.
A good guide for the hands on astronomer. Answers the questions on which eyepiece is best for which job, what filter accessories should be used. What accesories suite the beginner. How much do you gain in spending more on a more expensive setup vs a more moderate setup. Like any book written it has some blind spots and some opinion on equipment choice of Mounts and the necesity of GPS that I find questionable based on my experience, of the improvement in accuracy provided. Thats what netted it 4 stars instead of five. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Zecharia Sitchin's Earth Chronicles series is based on the premise that mythology is not physiologically based, psychologically metaphorical, or culturally allegorical but rather the repository of ancient memories, and that the Bible ought to be read as a historical scientific document. While the debate regarding the origins of myth is far from conclusive, and the dangers of assuming that the subjectivity of the reader/researcher will not intervene are obvious, Stitchin Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Real Mind Boggling Questions remain un-answered
I do agree with many reviewers that Sitchin's work provides a "new" angle, and for many, a new vision, to understand the mythology and religius theories of "beginning", history and "end". His premises might have been "mind boggling" for many a readers. There are, off course, good reasons for that. However, his having convincing reasons to establish new concepts while exploring and explaining religius traditions and myths, he has not been able to even slightly touch the most important questions asked by most curious human minds in all known human history. I would like to mention a few of them here in most simplest terms:
5-0 out of 5 stars Book III of the Earth Chronicle series
To be honest, I have not yet starting reading this book. This is the 3rd book in the Earth Chronicle series.I am currently reading the second book and devoured the first book. The 12th Planet is the first book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in ancient civilization and human culture, its art and deep historic meaning shed light where our current culture provides ignorant knowledge.Sitchin is classic within metaphysical circles and is essential in educating oneself about the 'Gods' and the truth concerning mythlogical origins on our planet. Sitchin's gift is his ability to analyse ancient text directly and logically and then take it to a much higher level than popular culture can even imagine.

1-0 out of 5 stars A war against sanity, more like!
This is more like a war against sanity than a war against dogma and narrow-mindedness. It is completely crack-pot stuff, and anyone who parts with hard-earned money to buy it, thinking to be led to some new revelation, is to be pitied. The alleged "scholarship" is dead wrong, the "scientific" methodology either laughable or non-existant, depending on one's point of view, and the overarching premises simply crazy. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensible solution to the mystery of religions
Being and agnostic most of my life and an athiest now at age 80, I think Bramley makes more sense than the theories of how most of our so-called religions have evolved. How else can one explain the contruction of the pyramids, Stonehenge, the Lost City of Atlantis that Aristotle talked about or the so-called miracles in the Bible? Bramley does not adequately describe what the aliens are using us slaves for. What are we human beings doing for the aliens? Why are they directing us to total globalism? I am reading this book a second time to see what answers I might have missed, because Bramley has really proven his theories quite well. People with open minds, free of dogma, will enjoy reading this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most important book ever... Hello?
Either this is a fantastic book. Or it's not. No one's ever going to change your mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars hidden history
The Gods of Eden by William Bramley is an excellent account on discovering who the "man" behind the curtain truly is. His research has uncovered a history that has been masked for centuries. It's contains have lead to me to other works related to this subject such as, "UFOs and the National Security State" by Richard Dolan, and the "Secret History of the World" by Laura Knight-Jadczyk. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Relating Space for the Masses!!
Mr. Jerry Jon Seller's book, "Understanding Space" is an amazing textbook about the technical aspects of space. The text is well written, the diagrams are easily understood, and the "tech-factor" for space geeks is acceptably high.It is no wonder that the United States Air Force has recommended "Understanding Space" as its baseline text concerning Technical aspects of space flight.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Undergrad Aerospace Students
The Air Force Academy has hit a grand slam with this book, and Embry-Riddle was wise to include it in its curriculum. This book is the equivalent of my coursework in 3rd Class Physics at West Point, but it has a decidedly aerospace slant to it that makes it an important piece for any person with a need to understand space. The illustrations are of superb quality and add to the learning experience of more visual learners unlike the Introduction to Astrodynamics book done by the Air Force Academy years earlier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by Astro PhD
Excellent introduction book with some of the best illustrations to help you visualize the concepts. It is written at the high-school senior/college freshman level, so don't expect it to teach you anything as a grad student in Astro. But, for the price, it's a pretty good desk reference even for the grad student.
