Editorial Review

In an effort to determine why people buy, Paco Underhill and his detailed-oriented band of retail researchers have camped out in stores over the course of 20 years, dedicating their lives to the "science of shopping." Armed with an array of video equipment, store maps, and customer-profile sheets, Underhill and his consulting firm, Envirosell, have observed over 900 aspects of interaction between shopper and store. They've discovered that men who take jeans into fitting rooms are more likely to buy than females (65 percent vs. 25 percent). They've learned how the "butt-brush factor" (bumped from behind, shoppers become irritated and move elsewhere) makes women avoid narrow aisles. They've quantified the importance of shopping baskets; contact between employees and shoppers; the "transition zone" (the area just inside the store's entrance); and "circulation patterns" (how shoppers move throughout a store). And they've explored the relationship between a customer's amenability and profitability, learning how good stores capitalize on a shopper's unspoken inclinations and desires.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flash of the obvious
An awesome new business book I read was Why we Buy- The Science of Shopping by Paco Underhill. This one is a business book primarily of interest to retailers (although I see similarities in retail and online habits).Paco (and his researchers) followed and recorded the behavior of tens of thousands of shoppers. From this he is able to run a consulting business that makes recommendations to retailers on minor changes they can make to increase their sales.

5-0 out of 5 stars A first rate book
This is a superb book, and Dr. Bourne shows extreme insight, preception, and understanding in helping the anxious individual in today's stressful world. He seems to know me better than I know myself! I highly recommend it to anyone who has suffered with anxiety, panic, phobias, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and shyness. It will help you to get on with your life! His book will not be surpassed!
5-0 out of 5 stars Relief from stress and all kinds of anxiety
An excellent handbook, better than therapy because you know the quality of help you're getting, IMHO. You don't have to have full blown phobias to be helped by this, so don't be shy about delving in and relieving yourself from negative self talk, chronic stress, or any kind of avoidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Help

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible 5-Point Scale
I recently ordered this book to use with my students. I am a special education consultant primarily working with students that have Asperger's syndrome or traumatic brain injury in a public school setting. I am always looking for materials that are functional and easy to implement. This book is great! Very straight-forward; provides quick and useful examples without a lot of lengthy explanation. This book provides tools for both teachers and parents to use quickly and without a lot of training or experience with Asperger children. Very easy to adapt and individualize as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for people who ask "but why..." at the end of every statement.
This book is absolutely excellent.I have looked through other stats books and lost interest immediately, but this book is written in such a way that it actually makes you want to learn the material. Rather than just telling you how to solve the problem, the authors inform you as to why learning it is necessary, and frequently give you real-life, interesting scenarios regarding how specific formulas are used by psychologists.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good moral support
My first impression was that this book was priceless since it really helped me through the first couple of chapters in the main text. At the beginning it goes into lengthy, step-by-step instructions. I may not have felt as confident in the class if it had not been for this supplement. Once I reached chapter 6 and 7 it was all over! There was not enough information to help me understand what the book was losing me on, I needed to seek private tutoring at this point. Occasionally I still go to the book in the hopes that it can pick me up and get me through the homework but it does not. These later chapters may be too complicated to go into in a study guide but what would a study guide be for if not walking you through the steps? I am glad I bought it, just dissappointed that it quit so early.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Statistics Resource
This is the very best statistics book that I have purchased (and I have purchased 5 others trying to help me get a grasp on this subject)! Just when I think I'm getting out, they pull me back in! The many aspects of the addictive personality are complex and TRICKY. The chances of understanding how it all works, apart from an excellent book like this, are remote.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read
Nakken's book provides a clear and comprehensive description of the main aspects of the addicted person. He discusses the stages of addiction, Society and addiction, family and addiction, and recovery.this book is definitely a useful read for those intereste in understanding addiction and what is actually going on within the addicted individual. However, we must always remember that people are unique and each case is individualized, thus these are generalizations and may not perfectly fit all who are addicted. The most imporatnt thing to realize is addiction is a disease and there is treatment.Highly recommended book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I don't normally write reviews, but I feel really strongly about this one. I have "pure o" OCD which is harder to treat because there are no compulsions. Even so, this book (along with an amazing therapist) really saved me. Every night when I would lay there panicking about the terrible fears in my head, reading this book always helped me feel better (at the very least, it distracted me as is explained in the 4 steps). I wish I could give it more than 5 stars because it has such an amazingly positive impact on my mental health. After 5 years of living a much improved life by this system, I would highly recommend this to anyone with anxiety.
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for some types of OCD, but simplistic and judgmental
This book teaches OCD sufferers four steps to use to control their disorder, starting with "relabeling" their fears and urges as just a symptom of a disorder, rather than "something real." By reading the case studies, I figured out that "relabeling" means telling yourself, "My urge to perform my compulsive ritual is not a supernatural omen that something terrible will happen if I don't perform the ritual; it's just a symptom of OCD."The author never actually explains this, however.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent self-help book

3-0 out of 5 stars ok
the book came in a reasonable amount of time but was not the same quality as was initially stated. It said the book was brand new but it had bent corners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book NOT in Good condition.
Company was prompt and service was great. However, the book was listed in 'good' condition and it is not. I can ignore the writing and hilighting but it had a defect in which it was missing about 50 of it's pages. To me missing pages does not qualify as 'good' condition. These people obviously do not check the quality of thier books.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing textbook ever written!
This is the best textbook I have ever used. It is engaging, VERY well written- basically- a page turner that will leave you with a true understanding of the concepts of cognitive science and learning. It is a joy to read, I have taken it with me for grad. school and will always have it close. Though it is an amazing reference tool to have around, this is really a joy to read--read it even if it is not for a class. I cannot say enough good things about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Learning
This is an amazingly well written text. Ms Ormrod actually practices what she preaches, so the book is organised as an exemplar of how to help students learn. I bought the book as an optional text for a Masters inEducation, then I sat up one night to check it out. It became compulsivereading, very hard to put down. It gives a broad overview of EducationalPsychology thinking over a wide period of time, and encapsulates it. It isfull of useful references. Many of my colleagues have borrowed this bookfor various courses and for course development for educational projects.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good practical reference book for teachers.
Human learning gives a good basic understanding of learning theory for teachers and others who are interested in educational psychology. There are some very good examples for all theories discussed. The book jumps around abit and some of the explanations are too technical. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Edition to a fantastic text
This new edition of the text once again proves that these authors are the masters of single subject research.I have used this text for five years in my graduate methods course and am completely satisfied with their coverage of the material of single subject research design.Just when a researcher thought it could not get any better, this new edition comes along with updates to the software.
1-0 out of 5 stars enough is enough
I was pleased to hear that this text had been assigned in a graduate research course at my graduate school of social work. I'm seriously disappointed. I would not recommend this text's continued use. It is excessively repetitive, constantly restating previous material (commonly referred to as 'rehashing'), and, as a sidebar, i can't help but mention an irritating habit of unnecessary references to material yet to come ('we'll talk about that more in chapter 14.'). The writing style is terribly wordy, and in a weighted, clunky pseudo-conversational style that rarely is effective in a textbook. The actual technical information is obscured in a constant river of verbiage, usually in page after page of solid block text, the least helpful format when learning technical information (or when subsequently searching for specific information or techniques). The result? It serves as a strong sedative. Finally, the authors repeatedly express apologies, in what eventually (by page 350) feels like an obsequious and cloying manner, for putting forward an empirical and accountable approach to clinical practice. The worst, though, is the repetition of material, as if the reader were an idiot. The sheer relentlessness of it is what is so galling, and at $100 bucks, neither affordable nor worth the investment. There are other texts out there with clearer, cleaner, more articulate prose, that are more respectful of the reader, and at half the price, such as the classic and affordable: Single-Case Research Designs: Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings by Alan E. Kazdin. Ignore the pollyanna reviews above and below, and avoid this text, or if on the syllabus, protest and suggest an alternative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in Practice Evaluation
Bloom, Fischer and Orme continue to make an unique contribution to improving practice in the human services by providing a road map by which practitioners can evaluate their effectiveness. I've been using their text book for over 15 years in teaching practice evaluation and in has been an invaluable help. The new edition has a CD Rom with SingWin, CAAP,and CAAS which I was able to install in Windows XP Home edition. You must install CAAS before CAAP for it to work. The sofware computerizes record keeping, score computation, and graph construction. I strongly reccommend this textbook for human services faculty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A psychotherapy practice could be built on this book!
I have recommended this book to one client who found it extremely useful as a means of managing his fear of death. Yalom's idea that the fears associated with the existential concerns of isolation, freedom, death, and sense of purpose form part of our subconscious-conscious dynamics is brilliant and original. He makes the argument that the anxieties associated with these concerns form a very early part of our experience and that they're repressed when the newborn is taught that it is not OK to experience these fears because he/she is either "special" or protected by a higher power, such as God. He states that the existential crises challenge these defenses creating depression, panic attacks, and other disorders. He develops these and many other useful notions all throughout the book. It is a long but fairly easy and clear read. If you're stymied by the length of the book you could start with his "The Gift of Therapy". Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not morbid in the least
Yalom points out that people often use one of two opposite methods for quelling death-anxiety: the "myth of specialness" in which a person places themselves outside of humanity so as not to die, and the myth of an ultimate rescuer, where a person clings to the idea of a savior to whom they can be subjugated. Both are dysfunctional.Other than saying that love ameliorates but does not eliminate death-anxiety, Yalom fails to offer a construct for balancing inward and outward-directed methods of dealing with that most terrible of all prospects, one's personal annihilation.
5-0 out of 5 stars From Literature to Science
My approach to Yalom came from literature. This is an interesting point of view of what our lives are supposed to be. ... Read more

The mother influences the child's growth and development. That's pretty obvious. This book goes to the neurobiological underpinnings of this phenomenon, referring to several thousand studies, to show how the connection between mother and child actual influences the way the child's brain develops. It is a treasure trove of information on how the prefrontal cortex matures through interaction with the mother in the early stages of life. 5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptionally thorough, well written study
I found this book exceptionally engaging and fascinating. I have read much about the development of affective, cognitive, psycho-sexual, self and gender development, and wanted to learn more about the physiological andanatomical correlates to the observable behaviors in babies and children, and this book was 100% satisfying. The author painstakingly discussesBowlby, Ainsworth, Spitz and other attachment theorists, providing theessential facts of affective and attachment development, and then in a veryclear, understandable way, provides the neuroanatomic and neurochemicalexplanations of the observed phenomena. The book is intensively researched, and the ideas are developed in a sequential, logical and easy-to-followmanner. 2-0 out of 5 stars Unwieldy, unhelpful
Some people swear by this book; I don't get it.It's a pain to either read or to use as a referenceThe layout of this book is busier than that of an undergraduate textbook. For no apparent reason, brain images are slapped into sections of some disorders and not others.Ditto for lists of empirical studies. The authors feel it necessary to reprint as a box the DSM-IV criteria for every disorder--only the box appears in different places for different chapters. In fact, the structure of each chapter seems somewhat different, even across chapters on similar disorders.I'm not really sure about this, though, as the organizational structure of the chapters continues to elude me.And it definitely lacks some information that most people would find helpful. For instance, there are (I believe) only two decision trees in this 1400 page opus. And lots of space is wasted. It's unclear what the first 250 or so pages are doing in this book, doing a slapdash job of covering the entire lifecycle, the brain, Jean Piaget, Freud, IQ testing, and anthropology. These are bracketed by chapter 1, on interviewing, and chapter 7, on doing clinical examinations. Why those two chapters are not consecutive is anyone's guess.Do I need to go into the writing? It fluctuates between platitudes and stupefying detail. The case histories are well-written, but they are generally taken from the DSM-IV Casebook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Synopsis of Psychiatry: Behavioral Sciences/Clinical Psychiatry
This is an excellent book.It was purchased for a social work class I was taking - Psychopathology and was used along with the DSM -IV-TR and was a great resource above and beyond the DSM.It is also very useful in my current job.It not only outlines all of the mental disorders in a easy to understand - detailed way, but it goes beyond that so that you have a real understanding of cause and effect.I would recommend this book to anyone who works with clients that need a diagnosis. It is a social work bible.

As known by many, Kaplan and Kaplan (or Kaplan and Sadock's) comprehensive textbook of psychiatry is pretty much the gold standard text book for the history and diagnosis of psychiatric illness used by all residencies and medical schools in the USA.This book is a thinned soft bound edition summary of the 2 volume comprehensive book. With this book, you still get many of the helpful tables, all of the information, and at half the price. This is no substitute for the Big book, but if you read this prior to any shelf exam in medical school, or as the basis for starting research into a disease in residency, you will have a good basis and diretion so your future searches will be easier, and the exams simple.Highly recommended, very good investment for Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and OB-Gyn residents/students to have on a shelf, and essential to psychiatric residents/students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emergence of a true science
Reading this textbook one can appreciate the science in the science of human behavior. Not that the science of human behavior isn't well-served by the philosophy of behaviorism or by ongoing research within the area of the experimental analysis of behavior. But what I saw in this book is just how much progress has been made in applications and how fully the scientific method has been utilized.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remains as relevant today as when it came out!
Is it possible to change one's own life and the lives of others by arranging our surroundings (environment) in a particular way? Any student of applied behavior analysis (ABA) would strongly shout out YES!
5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
This book provides the best text-book style introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis there is.The writing is straight-forward and well-organized.The only thing one could wish for is a second edition, but in the foreword it states they promised their families that there woulnd't be one :)That's ok, it provides all the groundwork one needs to read and understand the literature since then. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Legacy--4.5 stars
This autobiography is unusual to say the least. It is replete with deep, profound, mystifying, eye-opening, tantalizing personal experiences rather than mundane happenings. It reads, at times, like a fantasy novel.I'd call this powerful book an impressionistic painting of Jung's life and work. It's very personal and very revealing. It's no wonder he left it to the very end of his life.Fortunately for us, he did provide the data & it was posthumously published. It provides a depth of context for his work that is available nowhere else.It is, however, expurgated--presumably by his family who didn't want all his dirty laundry (e.g. affairs with clients etc.) made public. After all, it was published not long after his death. There is much to learn from this book--even by those offended by it.As Jung says, p.247 "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves."George MacDonald said "Those don't know England who only England know."Jung asks, p. 246 "How, for example, can we become conscious of national peculiarities if we have never had the opportunity to regard our own nation from outside?Regarding it from outside means regarding it from the standpoint of another nation."Similar to his more scientific works, this one contains innovative thinking & timeless observations.
5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta be crazy to analyze crazy people
If a regular person described the things that Jung describes in this biography, you'd say "this person is completely insane".
5-0 out of 5 stars "But Who Manipulates The Apparatus?"
More than any other work in his oeuvre, Carl Jung's biography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1961) takes the reader inside the mind of the eminent Swiss psychologist.Jung was both a self-admitted gnostic and an introvert, and this very personal account of his life, which he was completing at the time of his death, is correspondingly subjective in tone.

Absolutely the main text but check it out from the library - you will use it approximately 10-15 times in your research life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Power Analysis Text
Cohen does a masterful job of taking the guesswork out of statistical power estimation. This text provides procedural guidelines for determining power for many designs, and can be quite helpful in determining propersample sizes. Not for the casual reader, but a necessary addition to anyserious researchers statistical library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic statistical power reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner
This book is interesting, but it is far too "testbooky" and would benefit from being more focused on specific "how to" examples of treatment plans as do many other similar efforts. The text makes interesting reading, but, it didn't provide the concrete examples I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.
Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You.
Just what I needed, such a time saver now I can actually use my brain power to help not just write about it--Thanks again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A broad, contemporary approach
This book is easy to read, providing a broad overview of contemporary behaviour therapy issues.Having read it cover to cover, I would recommend this book be read in conjunction with further, more detailed texts to flush out the finer details as the authors cover a number of therapy and models generally without going into much depth. However as a general introductory text, the authors have in my opinion delivered a useful package with elements of behaviour therapy successfully complimented by real-life examples of case studies and useful end-of-chapter summaries. The textbook comes with an additional student resource materials/participation worksheet booklet which unfortunately I did not find useful.A good book for the undergraduate level.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thorough journey through the buffet of modern practice
I just got through using this text along with Beck's "Cognitive Therapy - basics and beyond."This is an informative text and gives a very broad overview of the various techniques that come under the title "Cognitive - Behavioral Therapy."If you are looking for a broad view - this would be the text, if you are looking for specific advice to apply to practice, choose another book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Vygotsky, Mind in Society
This is a good start to understanding the researh and theories of Lev Vygotsky.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMUST READ for parents, preschool through elem educators.
While the book is full of theory that might discourage someone from reading it, it has an absolutly fantastic practical implacation worth the effort! The second half of this book, "Educational Implications" discusses the Zone of Proximal Development. Learning about this "Zone" plus the discussion regarding how children learn to read and write, tells those of us who really want to help children learn, ways to set-up an environment and activities to do it!!5-0 out of 5 stars Socio-historical psychology
This is one of the earliest and still one of the best introductions to socio-historical psychology, the study of how individual human intelligence develops in interaction with people and the environment. In concert withmany contemporary approaches in cognitive science today, Lev Vygotsky, A.R.Luria and A.N. Leontiev argued that human intelligence ischaracteristically mediated through objects and social activity.Humansthink through tools.Talking to oneself, for example, is not an irrelevantactivity.Putting one's actions into speech is a way of focusing one'sconsciousness on the problem. This kind of speech is not pointless, butrather a cognitive tool that gives one a greater awareness of one's ownactions and makes it easier to modify these actions--a point that Vygotskyproved with research on how children solved problems.Much of humanactivity involves making use of tools, signs, and activities, the kineticmelodies of action and conceptualizationthat make us smart, and throughwhich we are able to accomplish the uniquely human feats of complexintellectual action. This is an excellent place to begin studying Vygotskyand activity theory. If you like this you will also like A.R. Luria's *TheMaking of Mind*, and the classics *The Man With A Shattered World* and *TheMind of a Mnemonist*, the books that inspired Oliver Sacks' writing. ... Read more
