3-0 out of 5 stars miss
This book offers a nice historical look at biology, but very little (if anything) about embryology is covered. The same can be said for the important development of anatomy.Sometimes it's best to read other reviews to find out if purchasing a book is the right decision or not.In this case, listen to the negative reviews. They're correct.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor coverage of titled subject
This book covers very little of the subject for which it is titled. If one were looking for a pure molecular biology textbook with some developmental correlations, then this is the text for you. It covers none of classical embryology and development. It is geared more towards laboratory technical work than to understanding fundamental principles. I had to give it only one star because of the misleading title. In reading this book, you will not learn the steps and stages of embryology and development. This text expects you to already know them like the back of your hand. You will not learn any developmental anatomy. You will learn a lot of seemingly arbitrary chemical signaling. Also, this text contains no glossary. I don't know what the author was thinking with that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in-depth intro to developmental biology
I think Scott Gilbert has done an absolutely stupendous job in writing this clearly written, beautifully illustrated and up-to-date exposition of developmental biology. The concluding chapter on evolutionary developmental biology is brief but very well done. The websites associated with the book and the CD provide much additional information.Definitely the premier textbook in this area.Don't tackle it without having taken at least a course in cell biology, and some exposure to biochemistry and genetics would be helpful as well. The last time I read a dev bio textbook was when I was in college 30 years ago; how things have changed! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Racist, Sexist, Dismissive of Anything but Biology
Feldman's "well-researched" book is a classic human development book, written from a rich white man's view. He does very little to express race and gender as anything but biology. These two things are sociological constructs in addition to being somewhat biologically based. In my world, half-truths are still lies. This book has a lot of pictures of people from different cultures, with different phenotypes, et cetera. It does not walk the walk or talk the talk of a socially responsible take on human development and psychology. For instance he uses Freud to speak of gender roles- a man who named an entire stage of human development after the penis. Just a poor read overall. It felt like going back to high school biology class. Not much more than a survey book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong edition
I was not pleased with the item received - it was supposed to be the 4th Edition, however I received the 3rd Edition.I did buy a new one and received credit for this, however it took longer than expected to finally get the correct book/edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise with current views on life development psychology.
I used this book in our Life Development Psychology. In the course of my study, everything I needed to know is in the book. Feldman is very thorough and organized. I have read other books on this subject in our library but by far this is a superior book. This book deserves 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Photographs
Excellent Photographs - I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the process that takes place from conception to birth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous photos!
The pictures in this book are wonderful and it is not only fun for expecting parents, but also for sharing with your children once they start to ask questions about what happens inside mom when a baby is in there!

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Pictures!!
I was given this book as a gift after I found out I was pregnant. The pictures were awesome and the information very useful. My only disapointment is that 3/4 of the book is dedicated to the first 12 weeks.(I didn't receive it until I was 14 weeks) It is still amazing to see what my baby looked like as it was developing, but I wish the later months were more in depth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for every parent!
As parents of teens, we tend to think that--by now--we have pretty much figured out what makes our kids tick...hormones, immaturity, psicological issues...right? Well, maybe that is only part of the picture. This books does a wonderful job of going beyond that, to the neurological foundation of behavior itself. It clearly explains the ramifications of the changes that are going on at a neurological level in the brain of teens and how that, consequently, translates into "teen behavior".
5-0 out of 5 stars Not an Instruction Manual
Strauch's book answers many questions as regards my teens' behaviors. My last one at home is 16; I purchsed this book to help me understand what is happening within that skull of his.Strauch utilizes her research to not only explain what my own child is going through but also helps to clarify the behavior of youth today as far as impulsivity, criminality, and various other compelling and noteworthy up-to-the-minute pertinent and important information we need to help our teenagers be successful in this day and age.The book is written somewhat like an investigative report, with a humourous punch, and is easily read by parents and teachers alike. It is an enjoyable and worthy read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read for Parents, Not Neurologists
This was a good read for parents of teens or pre-adolescents who are not in the medical field or some related field. The author is not a researcher but a journalist putting together what they've learned about the topic. (Some parents may have already done this for themselves.) It's not as detailed as someone well-read on the topic may hope, but for someone just becoming interested, perhaps someone experiencing shocking episodes in their own home with their own primal teen, it's a good starter book!Glad she put it together.Hopefully there's more to come with more neurological detail. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars OK but who's going to read this ?
I have a PhD in biochemistry (meaning I can understand a reasonable amount of jargon) and hoped that with this book I'd be able to understand what modern developmental biology (in particular developmental genetics, "evo-devo", etc.) is about, but this book bored me to death. There is no continuum, no logical progression in the teaching. When you reach the end of a chapter you've forgotten what it was about.I admire the central concept and the work but, frankly, as a book it's completely missed. It is not a textbook, it is not a popularization book, it's a 600+pages small print dissertation.Who wants to read that ?Who has the time to go to the library and check the details of any of the hundreds of referenced articles (all of them are treated only superficially) ? Not students, not professional scientists (their time would be better spent reading review articles), not laypersons.Who then ?

5-0 out of 5 stars New ways of thinking about Biology
I think that Mary Jane West-Eberhard is trying to formulate a new Shyntesis in Biology, she is trying to include Development in Neo-Darwinism. Her book makes the difference in the role that gives to phenotype, every biologist needs to read it to express his/her own opinions. Really deserves to be read.

5-0 out of 5 stars jump starting a revolutiion
Darwin developed his theory of evolution without knowing much about the mechanisms of heredity. These mechanisms were rediscovered in the 1900's as part of the science of genetics. By the 1930's a school of evolutionary thinkers came to the realization that Darwin's theory could be further developed by recasting it in terms of population genetics. The resulting synthetic theory of evolution has ruled mainstream biology ever since. But genetics has not stood still in the meantime. The rise of molecular biology has made possible a new discipline, evo-devo which seeks to explain how the genes control development. Evo-devo has developed a new approach to evolution. While the synthetic theory tended to see evolution as a matter of the loss of old genes within a population or the fixation of new ones, evo-devo has found that large parts of the genome are conserved over vast periods of time and shared by widely divergent phyla. Evolution has produced diversity by modifying the mechanisms which control the expression of these ancient genes. New ideas are now required to explain how this kind of diversity evolves. West-Eberhard proposes that genetic control mechanisms can be exposed to selection by the phenotypic adaptation of organisms to new kinds of environmemt. This phenotypic adaptation ultimately drives evolution. The germ of this idea had been put forward by J. Baldwim more than one hundred years ago but neither Baldwin or anybody else knew about evo-devo and the idea had little influence. Now its time may have come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for health care professionals, too!
I'm a pediatrician, and I recommend this book, not only to new parents, but also to health care professionals. This fascinating work is basically an annotated illustrated bibliography to the research in this field. Any professional who wants to know more can take this work as a wonderful, paradigm-shifting and enlightening starting point, and follow the cited works to further work.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book you can read during pregnancy!
This was by far the best book I've read during pregnancy. It's a fast and interesting read with great information and research that both my husband and I found equally exciting and valuable. I can't stop telling people about it. It's the only book I've read that doesn't preach about the wrong and right way to do things, but offers research to show how intelligent and aware newborns are. It is much less about the parents and much more about the babies. I would highly recommend this to anyone expecting a new baby in their family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Even stripes
- fascinating book, maybe not as revolutionary as Carroll claims.
5-0 out of 5 stars good solid popularization of evolutionary development, on the required reading list
It is a very well written book, on an immensely interesting topic in current biology. Written to the mythical average intelligent layperson without biological science studies. It doesn't require even bio101 to understand and it does get into topics which could be difficult if presented badly. The author is to be commended for not just his depth of biological studies but even more for his ability to popularize and write good science at a level that people can understand. I expect to see much more from this author over the years, this book is making the rounds of the discussion boards and i have yet to see a reviewer bad mouth the book.

I agree completely with the review by Gerald J. Nora. The book is first rate and does a fantastic job of showing the "real" anatomy as opposed to drawings where the artist takes some liberties. The text begins simple and builds upon it.The only down side is that the labels are not ordered in a top down fashion. For example, the labels may be: 3, 2, 4, 8, 7, 6, 5 which can be confusing.Overall the book is highly recommended as a reference to a traditional anatomy text. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Callahan
