Microbiology text,It helped me.
I like this book. Microbiology is very fascinating to me.Parasites, etc are particularly interesting.If you are assigned this book for your Microbiology class, my advice is to read it and know the information.This book was very helpful.
A lot of information....disorganized
I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

Fine book, for whatever it matters
The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about essential cell biology, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

Essentials grounded!!
I feel this is a very good textbook for molecular biology rookies as well as for pros wanting to revive their concepts ... Molecular Biology of the Cell could serve as an excellent companion book or rather reference book for this textbook ... the cd provided along with theEssential Cell Biology book is a great tool to understand the way things work ... in short, it is a must book for mol bio students to know what they are doing and to do things better:) It could also serve as a great book for biomedical engineers to grasp more of biology and engineer the concepts better. The book is definitely more simplified (kinda an abridged version) and easier to understand than "Molecular Biology of the Cell". Although, the size of the latter makes it look more formidable for beginners, I must add it is indeed a great reference book for researchers!

By far, the best in the series.
This book is awesome. In medical school and residency, i never needed a sanford antimicrobial guide and this is why. Helps provide a solid foundation for microbiology and infectious disease.During rounds or morning report i would constantly quote or refer to this book and people would be like "you're kidding", but it never failed me. I've read The Red Book cover to cover, Nelson's infectious diease section, Harrison's infectious disease chapters, and much of Feigin's book. All the info in those books is so familiar because of this book.
GREAT book for coursework and boards!!!!
this is such a good book for coursework...during my classes i felt the professors went TOO Much into random detail and i could not tease out what was important and what was junk...when i started using this book...all the important facts became obvious...there are charts at the end of each section...I used those as quick review before the boards...a month before my exam i re-read through the book from front to back...and during my 2 days of microbio review i just read through the charts...the corny cartoons actually help a lot!!! and they give some good clinical facts....goofy book...but great information...almost every single students at our med school had one...

Quality Micro Review
This is one of those review guides that's just dumb enough to be useful.Rather than give you a dry and crusty review of microbiology (which can be quite the crusty topic), this little text uses cartoons, pneumonics, and mildly off color jokes to cram facts into your head.I used it for the microbiology component of my medical school education, and then reread it with excellent results while studying for my step I examination.

What is very entertaining about this book is reading the very silly and scientifically-baseless reviews that gave the book one star.

I tried hard to read this book as an intelligent challenge to my faith - only to find that Dawkin's arguements require a leap of faith also- something about how irrational he is about religion - seems to dump his scientific mind and operate on raw emotion - sometimes something more like hate at times.

Good enough to be self-study book
This book is really amazing, gives good examples and alot of questions. It is easy to follow, but it hasn't the whole math of many derivations.

I found this book extremely verbose and unorganized.It would serve as a great reference book for a lab researcher or grad student.But it's way too technical and dense for an introductory genetics class.The authors do a poor job presenting the material in a comprehensible way to an undergraduate genetics student.Not recommended.

A Grad Student's Perspective
This is hands down the best general microbiology textbook on the market.Below, I'll explain why.(And I will also defend the book against some of the more ridiculous comments):
A truly worthless book
No textbook can satisfy the needs of all its readers, but an introductory textbook in microbiology might reasonably be expected to use modern discoveries in evolution, bacterial energetics and ecology to organize its subject matter.Brock fails on all counts.

It's ok
It's an okay book. I needed it for a class. There are several mistakes on the diagrams (our professor noted which ones).

Lots of typos and missing info.
Good study guide when the answers were in the back.Sometimes the answers were off by one or non existent.If you can get past that, it does help, but jeez don't they employ a proofreader?For thirty bucks, I was kind of disappointed.The textbook is great.

Schaum's Outline of Genetics
It is very informative and a great reference for the study of genetics and related studies.
best genetics text available
The Stansfield/Elrod outline remains as comprehensive as any of the intro to genetics textbooks currently available.At about 10-15% the cost of the "standard" texts, this outline delivers the same material with more clarity, and often more accuracy.The concepts of classical genetics, which often prove more challenging for students than molecular aspects, are covered admirably in this book.While those who enjoy colorful illustration and pastel text boxes might be disappointed, the b&w figures in this book are extremely clear, logical and most importantly helpful towards learning the material.No solution manual or supplemental CD-ROM is required.Highly recommended as a reference, or as a text for general genetics classes.

Very hard class but the book is great a great source for learning
a lot of info but it is broken down into bonehead terms.....

If only Campbell were the author...
There's not much to say.The book isn't confusing because the material is too technical--it's often confusing because the author doesn't go in enough depth; it's frustrating when a crucial concept is presented, such as Hamilton's Law, but no examples on its applications are put forth.I find myself frequently searching the internet to suppliment this textbook.It also doesn't help that the book doesn't come with a cd-rom, or any additional material, unless you purchase the teacher's edition...reading this textbook makes me yearn for Campbell.

Makes evolutionary biology interesting
Evolutionary biology can be extremely tedious for undergraduate students if one insists on teaching the more arcane debates as Fisher versus Shifting Balance. That might be good for a second course for future professionals, but if one starts with such stuff, students will lose all the interest in evolution they came with. horrible
Bought this one for Evolution class. It is a horrible excuse for a textbook. Do not buy this book unless it is for a middle school student. This is the gold star standard for practicing clinical microbiologists

At 1773 pages, the "Manual of Clinical Microbiology" is a good (medium size) reference for a clinical or diagnostic microbiologist. It offers detailed information on both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. Its authority is unquestionable. Pathologists, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and anybody whose business concerns infectious diseases will find the book useful. The classical Microbiology laboratrory text
This book is comprehensive, well put together and thorough in all of its aspects. It is an invaluable text in the microbiology department. I and my workplace have a copy, and it is the most often refered text in our laboratory only Bergeys and Mandell come close. All aspects including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, laboratory metheds etc etc are covered it is a one stop clinical microbiology text. Comprehensive in scope
I read this book with the expectation that it would give me an idea of the extent to which organism traits or phenotypes are determined optimally. Discussions on evolution frequently regard the functioning and attributes of an organism as being optimal at the particular time in its evolutionary history.
