5-0 out of 5 stars Great information

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative
What is easier to find than the bone your dog buried in the back yard? The answer is something to like in this new dog book by Dr. Becker and Gina Spadafori. After collecting a set of questions from observant dog owners, Dr. Becker and Ms. Spadafori turned to the experts for up to date answers about canine medicine and behavior, explained with common sense and humor. In addition to a great set of questions and answers, this book is sprinkled with some enjoyable essays about dogs.My favorite, by Ms. Spadafori, is called "Quit Picking On Poodles," (as a child, my two best four-legged friends were a pair of poodles our family had as pets and one couldn't ask for more intelligent and loving companions, so I have always thought they were unnecessarily maligned and I was glad to read her essay to that effect.) A fun and readable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cats Rule and Dogs Really DO Drool!
This little volume is a treasure trove of information about our crazy and wonderful canine companions! As a family doctor for four-legged family members, I have been asked many of these questions over the years.I never expected to find such a concise compellation of terrific answers!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mysterious ways of DoG
A Good Dog -- A story about Orson, who changed my life" by John Katz, is an incredible read, a true love story between human and animal -- bridging the gaps between belief and unbelief.
1-0 out of 5 stars used to be a big fan.
very upset about jons latest book.it really is just a rehash of his past books and not to his usal standard.there are dog people who specialize in dogs that bite why not consult one of them instead of a witch doctor?to do what he did must have been very very hard, and hurt very much .i was a huge fan ,read all his other dog books, this ones a big let down.

1-0 out of 5 stars Devon redux
I looked forward to reading this book; waited through several holds at the library; read all the other "dog" books by Jon Katz. When I started A Good Dog, the story seemed familiar...then I realized that Orson is Devon from a previous book.Very disappointing.Glad that I did not purchase the book. If Mr. Katz needed to address his issues with Devon, he should not do it at the expense (emotional and economic) of his readers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the emotional basis of behavior
Patricia McConnell has written a wonderful book filled with engaging stories and much practical advice for dog owners. She incorporates the latest research findings on the workings of the dog's mind in presenting her own cases from her behavior counseling service. Her discussion of counterconditioning covers an extremely valuable concept that is not stressed (or even utilized) enough by other behaviorists and trainers. This technique is invaluable and of nearly limitless potential in alleviating many emotional distresses and disorders in dogs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Improve your relationship with any dog
This book is packed with well-researched information about interpreting dogs' behavior, but it's still fun and easy to read. I used to be scared of dogs because I thought their behavior was unpredictable, but now I feel confident that I can determine when a dog is feeling playful and when it is anxious (and may be about to bite). A very, very helpful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge and fun at the same time? You bet!
I think it goes without saying that pretty much everyone who has a pet dog love's their dog and is convinced their dog loves them. But let's be honest. Most of us are pretty ignorant when it comes to really understanding dogs (and certainly in my case, many other things). So while it is true that you don't have to have great knowledge and understanding in order to love some other being, including your pet, you can certainly enhance and nurture any relationship through better knowledge and understanding. And that is what this book can do for anyone who wants to have their relationship with their animal companion to be the best it can possibly be.Not only is this book a great source of information and knowledge for understanding the emotional bonds we have with out 'best friends' and how to make the most of those bonds, it has riveting true stories that tie in beautifully with the different emotions we see and experience. When you combine this book with Dr. McConnell's earlier book "The Other End of The Leash" you will have perhaps the most comprehensive understanding of your dog and your relationship with your dog that is in print today. And a fun read too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book!
This book has been invaluable to me for years. In coming across an animal in life or in dreams, I have derived much insight from the lifecyle and meaning of the animal, and have applied the lessons to my own life.Whether it was a blue jay dying in front of me, or an elephant communicating with me at the circus, we co-exist with the animals on this blue planet and need to hear what they are saying.I also recommend "From the Horses Mouth" by Amelia Kincade, as the best book on animal communication I have read.

I have been clutching my copy of Animal Speak for many years now.I am coming today to purchase the workbook which I just discovered and wanted to write a quick review for this amazing book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nature speaks to you through animal sightings.
I received this book as a gift after a red tailed hawk made a visit to me every day for a week.In this book, according to Native American traditions, animals relate to us because everything in the earth is connected. There are messages being sent to us by these sightings.A fox runs out across the road (and hopefully, you miss it) not once, but three times?Red tailed hawk sitting on a street light along the highway every day for a week? All of a sudden, a squirrel comes to your yard and does something that catches your attention that you never noticed before? All of that has a message to you and you alone.I recently purchased two of these books as gifts for my sisters. And, they have shared it with their friends who have had similar sightings.Sounds kookie, I know, but it actually will make sense to you when the message is meant for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best book on reef care
An exceptional book on the subject. It is comprehensive but I would not say not complete as no book on this subject could be. Still I believe this book to be the best work compiled in book form. Described by many as "the Bible" on the subject it indeed may be but it is not dogmatic as it offers several options and methods and leaves it for the aquarist to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Age Appropriate
I bought this book for my four-year old.The age recommendation is four to eight. The text is entirely too graphic and detailed for children of this age.Parts of the book read like KISS lyrics or soft-porn.While this book is factually accurate and contains anatomically correct pictures, it is NOT age-appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was how I learned "the facts of life" :)
I remember thinking this was a great book when I was a little kid. I agree with the reviewer who said that it's most appropriate for small children; I was probably 5 or 6 when my mom gave it to me. I remember it being very cute, and not the least bit distasteful. Half of my family works as delivery room nurses, so I was asking lots of questions early on! I know folks whose parents were so embarrassed about giving "the talk" that they learned everything from kids on the school bus, etc. This book is a great way of presenting information in a way young children can understand, without having to lie to them or change the subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pictures are a little much...

3-0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 stars, because it is half a good book
When the author focuses on what she knows - autism, neurobiology, and domestic livestock - this book offers many insights. By applying some excellent existing research in neurobiology about what animals are truly capable of perceiving and feeling (read some of the referenced books for confirmation of emotions in animals) and applying her own experiences with domestic livestock and insights founded in her autism (a much more visual world than "normal" people (her word, not mine)), Dr. Grandin shows how a more visual, detail-oriented animal encounters the world.
1-0 out of 5 stars NO stars for this book!!
What a bunch of high school hallway gossip! The author does not know the difference between white and albino! The 'genetics' discussions on color (which includes people, chickens, horses, and dogs - all of it suspect) and mutts vs. purebred dogs are total claptrap! I confess, I couldn't get past page 87 when the author explains that 'one of the reasons wolves turned into dogs was that nursing human mothers probably adopted orphaned wolf cubs and nursed them at their breasts along with their human babies.' WHAT?? A waste of my hard-earned $. Having read those parts I cannot believe anything that went before or that follows, not that I'm reading any further. How is a multi-published author allowed to put such uneducated 'information' into print? And now she's influenced readers -- a terrible situation. Publisher, where are your pre-publication reviews? Shame on you for allowing this ignorant speculation to be published!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very, very interesting
This book was someone else's bookclub selection, and I think having no expectations when I picked it up really helped in my having that WOW experience that some folks report with this book and others miss. Yes, the prose needed much better editing: overuse of repetition, "stock" phrases, and "hanging" assertions that should have been cleaned up.However, I found the discussions of brain development/evolution, similarities between certain animal behaviors and human behaviors, development of language in different animals, and the coevolution of humans and dogs to be facinating (oops, just gave away the ending!).I found the side discussion of outcome-based audits interesting and enlightening.I also liked Dr. Temple's recommendation that people with autism be hired for baggage checking positions.Great idea! Although the book really goes all over the place, I found it a wonderful opportunity to engage my "seeking/hunting" motivation (you'll have to read the book for that one), and worth wading through the flaws to pick up the nuggets of gold. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best guide book on North American birds, PERIOD!
Ahh, the book with an identity problem. Is this a coffee table book or is this a field manual? It's far too small to be a coffee table book, yet far too large to be a practical field guide. I think Knopf (the publisher) tried to make it fulfill both roles so they decided to split the difference in sizes and in and so doing, they fulfilled neither role. Regardless, this book is astonishing to behold. It is as much a work of art as anything else. If you can have just one book on birds for the rest of your life, make it this one. I think the author said it took him something like 11 years just to carefully hand paint each of the bird illustrations in this book. Well it definitely shows! When this book was first released, it caused something of an uproar because it was way too large and heavy to carry with you out in the field. Yet, it was way too useful not to. I wrote the author telling him he should come out with a much smaller version of this guide that is more compact and lightweight for field use. Well, he listened to me because he did just that. My only complaint about this book (and the smaller version), is that the illustrations of the birds are just a wee bit smaller than what they should be. And with the target audience of this book being primarily baby boomers, this might not go over too well with their aging eyes. The somewhat smallish illustrations make it far too difficult to effectively identify many birds, especially birds of the sparrow family which are extremely tricky to visually seperate by their field markings. The author told me he did this for artistic reasons (to keep large areas of white page around the birds to visually seperate the illustrations). All fine and good, but you aren't trying to make an art book (at least I didn't think you were), you're trying to make something people can use out in the field (at least I thought you were). Still, this is by far the best identification book on North American birds availible and trust me, I've looked at them all. Go with the smaller version if you plan on carrying it with you out in the field. The large edition, though a bit small for a true coffee table book, will have to sufice in that role until Knopf finally decides to come out with a lager coffee table version of this book. Needless to say, I have them both and love them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sibley Guide
This is the best bird book of its kind on the market. While it is a little too large to be as handy as Peterson's for a field guide (unless you have very large pockets), it is indispensable for the serious birder. The convenience of having all of the information about a particular bird on one page cannot be overstated, and the illustrations are not only accurate but -- like Audubon's -- are works of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Birds of My Region
I am using this product as a study guide for a field elective class in college. It has supplied me with great pictures and information for almost every bird I have had to study so far.I love the quizzing feature the most.It has been the highest effective learning tool I've used with this DVD.

Editorial Review

There are about 100,000 kinds of insects in North America, so obviously they can't have a field guide in the same way the 650 species of birds do: something both portable and complete. The National Audubon Society has produced a remarkably useful compromise. This guide has photographs and descriptions of 550 insect species and 60 kinds of spiders. Most of the families of arthropods on the continent are covered, as are all of the most common species. It's a very useful resource for any North American naturalist, and the best choice for an adult who is not an expert entomologist. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
This Is a field guide and it is a good one, you may not be able to ID what you are looking at but you can narrow it down for further research. I use this with two other books one on spiders and one on dragonflys and have been able to ID everthing pretty easyly

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic For A "Guide"
I bought this book because I am a photographer with a growing interest in spiders and insects, and I need to know what my subjects are. Before I bought this book, I mostly did Internet research to try to find the exact species.Since I'm not an entomologist or arachnologist, I'm sure you can imagine that my search words often weren't very effective (for example, brown spider in California). Now that I have this book, IDing spiders and insects is much easier.I'm not saying that everything I take a picture of is in here; in fact, the exact species often aren't.But most of the time I can narrow it down to the point where further research is much more successful. This book also explains the correct terminology, which is extremely helpful when searching online or in other books.I know a lot of people out there are disappointed because this book is missing so many species. But honestly, they should have known better than to expect a small FIELD GUIDE to contain so much.If you're looking for a complete encyclopedia of insects or spiders, this book will very disappointing. But if you're looking for a GUIDE (i.e., you're an amateur and you just need to be pointed in the right direction), then you should find this book extremely helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
I found this book to be overly broad, which should not have surprised me, given the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Endearing Ocean Story
What an endearing story about the ocean. As an avid SCUBA diver, I loved the idea of a baby whale following a swimmer along the coast because it lost its mother.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book for everyone
This is a great book.Easy to read and it paints a beautiful story of one woman's experience.I could not put it down and wanted to read the end first to see what happened.I passed it on to my husband, 11 year old son and 14 year old daughter. It is a nice book with a nice story. Not too many of those books out there now. Will make a great gift for anyone who loves to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take a pass on this one
The idea behind this book was a good one and the reason that I purchased it in the first place. The opportunity to swim with a baby whale in the wild is something many of us only dream about, yet Ms. Cox got to experience it firsthand and it makes sense that she would want to share that story.Unfortunately, this book does not get the job done.It is so poorly written that I had to force myself to keep turning the pages.I kept hoping that maybe I just needed to get used to her writing style, but there is no style... it's just written badly. The narration is often choppy, the paragraphs don't flow, and much of the detail about the ocean seems a bit over the top.As one other reviewer put it, it's as if every detail of her every swim in the ocean was combined into that one day.Not very realistic. If you are going to enjoy this book at all, perhaps a little suspension of disbelief is in order.Whole sections are just plain boring, and to add insult to injury, the illustration on the front of the book is not that of a gray whale (the species that Cox swims with in the book). It's a sperm whale.A small thing, yes, and a decision made probably more for marketing purposes than out of ignorance, but it still serves to make the overall package even less honest or appealing. After plodding through about half the book, I finally quit and returned it for a full refund.Save your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide to natural history and identification!
I can only echo Piotr Naskrecki's review. When this book arrived my first thought was "Wow! This is the insect book I've been waiting for!" The illustrated flowchart keys to insect orders and families are outstanding and will be more easily used than the conventional keys in standard texts. I've been interested in insects most of my life (over 50 years) and this is the most incredible introduction to the subject I've seen. The only quibble I have is that the butterflies and moths don't have an illustrated flow chart key to their families. But don't let that keep you from getting this wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
At last we receive a well-written, comprehensive, and gorgeously illustrated guide to insects of eastern North America, a book that has been badly needed for many, many years. Stephen Marshall did a splendid job of combining in a single volume information on biology and identification of most families of insects found in this region, and did it in a way that is both pleasing to the eye, and truly educational. Lavishly illustrated with literally thousands of color photos, this book is an encyclopedia of North American insects, and a fantastic invitation to the exploration of our insect fauna. It includes overviews of all orders of insects found in N. America, and provides user-friendly flowchart keys to their identification (down to the family level) that are short on technical jargon but rich in illustrations. The book also has chapters on collecting and photographing insects and other small critters. I am sure that this volume will influence many budding naturalists, and quickly become the resource of choice for entomology teachers and students. An absolute must in the library of anybody with an interest in natural history as well as a useful reference for gardeners. I simply cannot recommend it enough. ... Read more

I bought this book to use as favors for my children's birthday party. The party was taking their cousins/friends to see the movie Curious George. It's a very cute book and Curious George's curiousity doesn't get him in too much trouble. It shows all the things that the man in the yellow hat does to prepare for a surprise party for George. It's great to see my children (3 and 5) enjoying book characters that I enjoyed as a child.

It is organized in a way that makes terrific sense so you can easily find the section you are looking for.....I'm using a library copy, but I definiely want one for my own collection and library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Imperfect but a Great Start!!!
I purchased this book in an effort to make good on the commitment I made to my hulking 5th wife. She (Bessie) has been increasingly difficult to manage and in general, a bit of an overweight wild bronco.I, semi-correctly, thought this book would help.I note the following from the book's description:
4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.
I am reading books on horsemanship.I had seleted various authors and cooresponding trainers. Each offer styles that work. Each are similiar. The difference is the preentation of the material. I have a dog and have brought him back from the meanest one I ever owned. He was abused and he has found a very loving home. He is no longer mean, showing his teeth on every approach. The things I see in horse training are very similiar to how I work with dogs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new horse owner
I am new to riding and just recently bought a horse. This book, together with "How Your Horse Wants You to Ride," has been a great help to make sense of all the well-meaning advice and my observations.
