5-0 out of 5 stars ANABSOLUTE TREASURE!
Pavia et al's Organic Laboratory Techniques (2nd Ed) is an astonishingly excellent book for the beginning student.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Lab Text But Not Everyone Has To Buy It
Though a complete laboratory text with 50+ experiments, lab techniques, tables of unknowns and spectroscopy, the organic faculty prepare our ownlab manual to be followed.Pavia text becomes a close handy reference forlab techniques and setup. The techniques section, which includefiltration, crystallization, distillation (simple, fractional, and steam),chromatogrpahy (column, thin-layer, and gas)... should be carefully studiedbefore conducting experiments for beginning students.Unless your organiclab course follows almost exactly the outline of experiments in this text, you can check it out from the library and read it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars These people all lie
Don't misjudge my review; I'm not just some lazy kid who hates all work.I'm in the honors program at UCI studying to be a doctor. And this book isn't very good. The reading, I will grant, isn't too bad. Most of the time it's easy to follow, and sometimes it's confusing. However, the problem comes when you try to put it all to the test and do the problems at the end of the chapter. Not only does the book present problems that were not covered in the reading, but it doesn't explain the answers, either. It just gives them to you.I am forced to constantly ask a friend of mine if he knows how to get the answer they give, because the book gives no indication of how to arrive at it.It also withholds information; in one problem in chapter 5 the answer they give is only possible, ONLY possible, if chymotrypsin cleaves a protein at isoleucine (the book only gives leucine, not iso-).In the next problem, it is virtually the same thing, taking cleavage information and trying to put amino acids in the correct order. However, in this one, their answer insists that you NOT cleave at isoleucine.Otherwise you'd be wrong and wonder what you did.Of course, you'd get no explanation. If you have to get this book for a class, then fine.Good luck with the homework if you have to turn in the problems. But if you're getting it to further challenge yourself of your own accord, search around for some type of solutions manual first, because this book won't tell you how to get anything. It assumes you have a lot of background knowledge already, so I don't know where one reviewer got the notion that this is great for beginners...if you want a good book for beginners, seek out the Garrett & Grisham book.It simplifies biochemistry beyond belief compared to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to start Biochemistry!
Mathews Biochemistry is an excellent book to start this difficult subject! The easy diagrams and interesting notes just keeps you wanting to learn more...Read, read and read.If only it could have a more clinical focus it would be 100% perfect. Combine it with "Harpers Biochemistry" and you will soon run A+ on scores! To die for!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I am a biochemistry major at the university of the philippines.i have several biochem books on my shelf and i just recently purchased a copy of the 2000 edition (i also have the 2nd ed).the book just keeps getting better.the book really helps a lot especially when the class lecture corresponds with how the book presents the subject matter.as a biochem major, i'd say this is a pretty good way to present biochem.it makes it seem easy and fun to read.you look at the pictures and read the caption and you learn the idea in a flash. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $ and frustration
I returned to college to further my education this year after working as a High School Chemistry and Biology teacher for the last 5 years, and your text "Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac) 8th Edition" is the required text that we are using for my Quantitative Analysis course.Myself and numerous other students in the class have found ourselves completely exasperated with the text for numerous reasons. Some of the reasons are as follows:
3-0 out of 5 stars Work carefully and check the author's math if perplexed
Overall, the book is average. Towards the end when you start reviewing different techniques like voltammetry, potentiometry, spectrometry, and seperations the author explains the material fairly well (and has the least in text problems). I noticed a lot of errors in the book for the in text examples so be careful when checking your answer. I bought the solutions manual to this book and a couple of questions in the manual actually stated that the answers in the back of the book were incorrect. Be very careful from chapters 9-20, as I noticed a few examples had math errors. Also, at least for me, the mathmatics were derived, but not explained as to understand why they add a new term or perform an operation. I would have liked to see them relate the math to the concept better than they did. If you sit with this book (I mean really sit with it) you'll do fine. This is not a text nor a course that you can cram for. It has to be studied everyday of the week.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I used this book in my undergrad Analytical Class.I sold it back at the end of the semester and have wished I hadn't for the last eight years. It is well thought out and easy to navigate when a quick answer is needed once you are out in the "real world".There are some mistakes, like any textbook, but I think the other reviewers are just frustrated crammers sending out late-night rants. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From the authors, Bill Leffler and Don Burdick
n a world of sequels, and cruising off the success of Petroleum Refining for the Non-technical Person, we thought people in and around the petrochemicals industry could use a simpler description of their products and processes. For a target audience, we had in mind not the engineers and chemists but the marketers, the transporters, the suppliers, the finance people, the support people, and those bungie managers that seem to be in perpetual motion through various jobs in the business. We do,however, see copies of our book on the shelves of many of our technical friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the authors, Bill Leffler and Don Burdick
We wrote the first edition of this book in 1983. Our intent was to create something to allow people outside the business to be able to talk knowledgeably and cogently to people inside petrochemicals. Little did we believe that the 3rd edition 20 years later would still be in big demand for the same basic purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, technically complete

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, its an Organic Chemistry Book...
I gave this book 3 stars simply because I cannot really compare it to any other organic book. The explanations inside, however, are put into simple terms and the problems are not overly excessive, and cover the basic lessons that each chapter tries to teach. For being my first organic chemistry book, I'd say that it is pretty swell!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't take Ochem lab w/o it!
This is a phenomenal book in which Mr. Zubrick brings down the complexities involved in Organic Chemistry Lab into terms that undergraduates can understand. Also, in something I've never seen done before, he adds humor to his writing. I actually enjoy reading this book, and get more out of it then any other lab text I've ever read. If you take Organic Chemistry Lab without it, you're doing yourself a pretty big diservice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worthwile
Zubrick's manual gives a comprehensive overview of fundamental lab methods.I've found it to be very useful on many ocassions. However, some of the explanations could be improved with discussion of the theory, especially the sections on chromatography.Even so, it's cheaper than other books and explains many techniques very well.

1-0 out of 5 stars What have I done to you chemistry??
I bought the book because they said it was good for writing Lab Reports. But no, I can't, The book is so incomplete, he wastes space trying to make it funny and humorous. I'm not gonna write his jokes on my report. Yeah and remember if you didn't copy the whole lab manual on your notebook, you are dumb and you got the highest F. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Reference Book Ever for Polymer Science
This book is organized in such a clear fashion that you will find virtually any fundamental polymer property, its origin and related theories in it.Most importantly, this book collects so many property tables that you will be amazed by how useful it is in your research. It is no doubt one of the most cited refrence in publications.A wonderful reference book for graduate students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never miss this handbook!!
I am working in Polymer relative field, and I need to know variousproperties of dozens of polymers. I am not a computer, so I could known allof them. Sometime I want to find a handbook for polymer properties, butmost of handbook only summerizes some common polymers. Thus, I can't findthe information through th handbook, but this book gives more than onehundres types of polymers with broad fields such as thermodynamic, mechanical, electrical, etc.. If you are a person who work in the polymerrelative fields, it is definately a handbook you need to have. Trust me,you can make it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I took both semesters of P.Chem, failing the first because I took way too many upper level Chem Classes & working as well as a weak background in Calc 3. After studying Calc III by myself over the summer and retaking the class, I am able to absorb so much more and I'm ripping a new one in this class. It is truly an amazing book. Having a solid math background helps one to 'connect the dots' so-to-speak whenever Dr. Levine makes these 'shortcuts'. Tons of worked examples, difficult yet definitely possible homework problems and an acutual intelligent sense of humor are woven into the this book making an extremely complex and difficult subject..... engaging, lol. I spend close to 40hrs. per test and I'm thankful I'm putting myeself through this. Great book, just make sure you have a solid understanding of partial diff eqns. and complex algebra before you take it. Not meant for the weak of mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite, if not most favorite, chemistry text
Good descriptions coupled with thoughtful examples and challenging problems, however, the Quantum section is wanting, while the Thermo/Stat Mech is the best in the business.I've used this text as a reference in other courses in chemistry and physics.A physical chemistry text of this caliber is a must have for any physical chemistry student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book but it may be difficult to learn pchem from originally
I thought that this book was very well written but as a person who was learning it for this first time it was extremely difficult to follow.Levine would frequently take pretty simple concepts and make them sound far more complicated than they really are.The reason for this is that he wanted to cover all his bases so that everything he said was utterly 100% correct.I would have liked it if he could simplify it a little more to make it easier to understand and then just say that there is an instance where it isn't true but it isn't covered until grad school. One example is that he makes the distinction between a perfect and ideal gas and then half way through the semester he tells us that they are actually the same thing.I know the logic behind it was to be perfectly rigorous with the way he was laying it out but it ended up just confusing me more. There are many good problems there and his true/false questions are very good at making sure that you know the material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Distilled Wisdom About Everything
I can't imagine a scientist or engineer of nearly any stripe without a copy of this book. I can't imagine a lab without at least one edition sitting around somewhere. The title says it's on chemistry and physics. And it is. But it's so much more. It's the consise summary of all of our technical knowledge. It represents the facts pulled out of nature by thousands of researchers since we humans began writing things down. And it's all in one place.
5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible resource
If I were allowed only two reference books, they would be the OED and this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory text on Proteins
This is a great introductory text on protein science. It starts off with the basic chemistry of amino acids and polypeptides and goes from there into higher order structural organization of many proteins of many families. Reading this book allows one to think about protein function being a direct result of what the structure imposes. Although this is not a protein chemistry book, it's a great place to start appreciating how proteins do what they do following some elegant design principles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Basics of Protein Structure - Great for revision!
I used this book a lot for one of my undergraduate courses three years back. It's excellent at explaining the fundamentals of protein structure, it's written very clearly and the diagrams are easy to understand and appropriate.I found it particularly useful when studying immunology, the explanation of immunoglobulin structure, splicing, and mechanism of action was better than some of the other textbooks I used from the library.I finally bought a copy as reference and to aid revision of some basics while applying for research associate positions within the biochemistry field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for those interested to learn the essentials of protein structure
This book is one of the best books that addresses the topic of protein structure. The book answers nearly all the questions that anybody interested to know about protein structure.Meanwhile, the authers provided clear examples about how elucidating a protein structure can hint for its function(example, B-lactoglobulin structure similarity to retinol binding proteins hints for its function as retinol binding protein in the mammals intestine).Besides, the organization of the book chapters made it so easy to read. Above all, the versatile illustrative examples and figures that the authers usedmake reading this book is really enjoyable for people have the basic background in biochemistry or those who are interested to building skills in biochemistry as well. The chapeters describing prediction of protein structure and methods to determine the protein structrue are really so valuable as a basic introduction about these broad topics. With basic biochemistry skills, this book will be so enjoyable. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Old fashioned fortran, strong bias on Monte Carlo
There is a very strong bias to MC methods in the book. What they have to say about Molecular Dynamics methods is not really new, most of it is virtually copied from the classic by Allan/Tildesley, and many MD techniques which they consider "advanced" (such as cell list methods, verlet tables, etc.) are shifted to one of the many appendices. They do not talk about ghostparticles for instance or give a detailed account of parallelized algorithms which is really state-of-the art today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for beginners in simulation
Its an excellent book for those who are just beginners in MC & MD simulations. everything is very clearly explained with lot of examples and some related unsolved problems. the text explores this topic indetails with advanced chapters in later sections. Good for anybody int hsi field be it in materials science, physics or related fields.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for New Grad Students
This book is how I bootstrapped my way into being a molecular simulationist.Anyone who can program in some language can get started writing simple routines for the basic MD and MC simulations.Read more
