4-0 out of 5 stars FTIR Bible
This is a great reference for anyone designing or using FTIR instruments. This book is really intended for the advanced users and is worth the price. The only major drawback is that it is getting a little dated.4-0 out of 5 stars The Classic Reference on FTIR
This book is the Bible of FTIR, written by the twin gods of FTIR,Griffiths and DeHaseth. It contains as complete an introduction to thetheory and practice of this field as is available.Anyone who wants adetailed understanding of this field, and in particular how FTIRs work, should own this book.However...there are 2 reasons why I gave the book4 stars instead of 5.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to be self-study book
This book is really amazing, gives good examples and alot of questions. It is easy to follow, but it hasn't the whole math of many derivations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to understand the physics if life?Need to read this!
The topic of this book, the physical chemistry of molecules, especially those relevant to biology, is one of the mostchallenging courses to a college student in chemist. But these authors have tried to make it easy for you - and they succeed. They used figures, pictures and analogies to help you to understand some of the most sophisticated concepts in science. For example entropy. The authors are leading researchers in the field and they brought a unique perspective to the subject; the writing is very lucid. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a big dictionary...
Personally, I don't like this book.It reads like a big dictionary... lots of words but nothing tying things together.I found it difficult to find and follow a set of concrete steps to help get a PMO up and running.I understand it is "complete" but it does it at the expense of the "shotgun effect"--throwing a lot of stuff out but not really zeroing in on anything.
5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this Handbook "Handy"
Hill's book is an excellent overview of the Project Management Office(PMO) stages and functions. It is well-organized and well-written, with each chapter following a consistent format and including a related function model for the topic being discussed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a very useful book for project managers and executives. A very complete book on the subject of project management offices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good NMR text
This is an excellent text book written by a chemist. Author handles some of hardware stuff as well as physical chemistry of NMR based on quantum mechanics. This text provides us with clear pictures of NMR phenomena. Some detailed explanations about basic NMR pulse sequences are excellent for everybody who studies this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any aspiring NMR jockeys
For those studying biomolecules with NMR, the unofficial bible is of course the maroon colored Cavanagh book.Though this is an excellent book, it isn't the best suited book for beginners. This is where Levitt's book comes in:this is by far the kindest introduction to NMR that I have seen, with heavy emphasis on understanding the concepts first and the formalism later. The book is full of useful diagrams, detailed analogies, and exercises for the reader where other books only show equations. So borrows someone's Cavanagh first, and if you get stuck after 20 pages then order yourself a copy of Levitt and you won't be disappointed. If you already have studied NMR and are looking at how to apply it to proteins, then Cavanagh should suit you fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear first introduction to NMR
This book could simply be stated as an excellent attempt to introduce the foundations of NMR. It is a very good primer on all theoretical aspects that are essential to an understanding of the subject. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A most worthy successor to the first edition
In the sixteen years since the appearance of the first edition of Lakowicz's Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, the use of fluorescence as an analytical tool has grown remarkably, especially in instrumentation, available fluorophores, and practical applications. Therefore, itshouldn't be surprising that the second edition of the work has more thandoubled in size.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, new edition out soon
Joe Lakowicz has just finished a thorough revision of this classic work, which should be coming out soon.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $ and frustration
I returned to college to further my education this year after working as a High School Chemistry and Biology teacher for the last 5 years, and your text "Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac) 8th Edition" is the required text that we are using for my Quantitative Analysis course.Myself and numerous other students in the class have found ourselves completely exasperated with the text for numerous reasons. Some of the reasons are as follows:
3-0 out of 5 stars Work carefully and check the author's math if perplexed
Overall, the book is average. Towards the end when you start reviewing different techniques like voltammetry, potentiometry, spectrometry, and seperations the author explains the material fairly well (and has the least in text problems). I noticed a lot of errors in the book for the in text examples so be careful when checking your answer. I bought the solutions manual to this book and a couple of questions in the manual actually stated that the answers in the back of the book were incorrect. Be very careful from chapters 9-20, as I noticed a few examples had math errors. Also, at least for me, the mathmatics were derived, but not explained as to understand why they add a new term or perform an operation. I would have liked to see them relate the math to the concept better than they did. If you sit with this book (I mean really sit with it) you'll do fine. This is not a text nor a course that you can cram for. It has to be studied everyday of the week.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I used this book in my undergrad Analytical Class.I sold it back at the end of the semester and have wished I hadn't for the last eight years. It is well thought out and easy to navigate when a quick answer is needed once you are out in the "real world".There are some mistakes, like any textbook, but I think the other reviewers are just frustrated crammers sending out late-night rants. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent excercises...
It's an OK book if you are a novice in the Spectroscopy determination area, but a very nice book if it's going to be used as a reference book. It's very handy and explains the principles of the Spectroscopic and Spectrometric determinations in a very understandable way. Moreover, the excercises are challenging, making this book and excellent tool for those students interested in learning how to determine structures out of some spectra, although the spectra sometimes are so clean that they don't correspond with the one's that are taken by routine. The weak points of this book are the IR chapter and the lack of a UV chapter explaining various useful techniques for structural determination such as ORD and CD. The NMR section is just OK, but there are more details to be explained in the 2-D NMR NOESY, TOCSY and ROESY. I think the Mass Chapters are the best that any single book has offered to me so far to understand quite easily how powerful is the GCMS as a tool for the Structural Determination of Organic Compounds.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reference vs. Teaching Material
This book has wonderful charts and tables for quick referencing, however it is sorely lacking in demonstrations and worked out examples for students new to the subject. The chapters are painfully slow and complex when explaining the theory behind the spectrometric methods and effects on classes of molecules. In short, don't use this book to learn the material unless you already know it. It is a comprehensive reference, but not an effective textbook to teach from.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great material, regular text...
The book is subdivided into only 3 of the 4 classical methods for spectrometric identification of compounds: IR, MS, and finally NMR (covering 1H, 13C and very little of 19F and 31P).UV is left out in this edition, so maybe getting a hold of the old edition's UV chapter (which is extremely well-written) might be desired. The MS and the IR chapters are also well-written and explained out.It is in the main technique (NMR) that the author fails to deliver the subject in a straightforward manner and lacks what I think is most important in this field: a large number of exercises and problems. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite comprehensive
For the topics this book covers, it does so well. This includes MS, IR, titrations, etc... However, as one being trained as an analytical chemist (specifically mass spectrometrist), I feel compelled to note the complete absence of NMR material in the text. I consider NMR one of the most powerful analytical tools at a chemist's disposal. Hence, this text is good for those being introduced to analytical chem, but not for those looking for further study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Analytical Chem book/Chem ref
This book was a required text for my analytical chemistry class. I was at first a bit worried about it, I tend to be picky about chemistry textbooks, but I quickly fell in love with this one. The chapters are short and to the point (most between 20 and 30 pages). Harris tells you what you need to know and gives some good examples in those 20 pages. Other books I have had to use took in excess of 50 pages to describe what Harris does (much better at that) in under 30. This is a nice feature for the time pressured college student.
4-0 out of 5 stars What do you expect?
This is an analytical chemistry textbook, not exactly the most thrilling of chemical disciplines. (unless you are an analytical chemist). It explains things fairly well, and the problems are at the end of the chapters are pretty similar to what you would find on the ACS test for analytical chemistry. The author has a sense of humor and randomly inserts jokes in some of the material. I believe this is the most popular of textbooks for analytical/quantitative chemistry courses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great chem book
It is an honor to rate this book even if I didn't buy it off of Amazon. When it comes to Quant. Analysis, Harris is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Ready for Titrations!
Quantitative Chemical Analysis is a text intended for the first semester of Analytical Chemistry, which is known as Quantitative Analysis at my school. It is a course that is usually required for chemistry, chemical engineering, and biochemistry majors, as well as chemistry minors. This course follows second semeter general chemistry and broadens on the topics covered in that course. It is heavily based on calculations, however the calculations do not require any mathematics beyond basic algebra but do require extensive use of the quadratic formula for equilibrium problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
You simply cannot ask for a better text. The book explains introductory analytical material with great detail and even incorporates a sense of humor to the material. I use the book to study and I've gotten an A on every Analytical test this semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classics in Total Synthesis Revisited
The more I read and study out from the book, the more I appreciate the beauty of it.Nicolaou and Sorensen's Classics in Total Synthesis is the most widely consulted title on organic synthesis. As many have commented, this book is a must for every synthetic organic chemist, organic student and researcher.5-0 out of 5 stars This Could Be The Only Synthesis Book You Need...
A graduate student strongly recommended me to get this book and start reading. At first intimidated by the complex synthesis steps and unfamiliar reagents, the Nicolaou synthesis book is a must read for organic students and chemists. Unlike "The Logic of Chemical Synthesis" (no doubt is also well-written), Nicolaou's "Classics in Total Synthesis" is a pictorial account of some of the representative syntheses of natural products. The detailed, well-written text discusses total synthesis work of chemists such as Heathcock, Corey, Evans, and Nicolaou himself. Each synthesis is preceded with the historical background and significance. A detailed synthetic scheme is included with detailed discussion of each intemediate and inidvidual step. Reader will surely learn a great deal by working through each synthetic step with a pencil and paper. While most advanced organic texts discuss the typical traditional methods in synthetic chemistry, Nicolaou discusses practical approach to synthesizing complex stereospecific compounds. Corey's "The Logic of Chemical Syntheses" might have the similar scope in organic synthesis, yet Nicolaou will be more reader-friendly especially for beginning students in organic synthesis.Nicolaou presents not only the tactics of the subject, it also brings out the beauty of the art of total synthesis.A good read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for synthetic organic chemists
This is an impressive collection of 36 syntheses. Each chapter describes a different synthesis.Included are a retrosynthetic analysis(very helpful for those learning the art of total synthesis), the total synthesis(explaining key steps along the way and why the reaction gave the products it did) and then some conclusions. The appendix in chapter 22, on Catalytic Asymetric Reactions is very useful. If you bought "The Logic of Chemical Synthesis' and were dissapointed, don't let that scare you from this book.It is well worth the price. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating
The explanations provided in this text book are decent; although, on occasions the book's breadth is insufficient.Unfortunately, the answer keys and test questions that accompany this text are riddled with inaccuracies. After my Organic Chemistry class gets back each test, we spend a half hour eliminating faulty questions.Further, while this book is egregiously expensive, one must pay extra to access the online features.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition updated
The 1st edition (the 1980 version) was the gold standard of electrochemistry books, and the authors have done an excellent job of revision for the 2001 2nd edition. In particular, the sections on impedance and modern pulse methods flow nicely. The spectroscopy section has been updated as well. I have not worked many problems, but they seem useful in elucidating concepts. The mathematics is of a higher order than one expects from electrochemistry, showing the impact of kinetics on electrode processes nicely. I recommend this text for electrochemistry courses highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
This is a very complete and thorough book, and covers all of the fundamentals. It suffers from being somewhat out-of-date (1980), so it does not cover modern techniques (e.g., x-ray, STM) or single-crystal electrodes. Read more
