Comprehensive, but not complete
This book was used in a class I nearly took in college; while I couldn't fit the course into my schedule, I kept the book.
One of the best introductory inorganic textbooks around
I bought this book on the recommendation of one of my chemistry advisors. I must say, it is one of the best books available on the market for inorganic chemistry. The chapters on bonding, solid state, and coordination are very well done, but the authorshave done a good job on the rest as well. They don't try to gloss over anything and provide references for further reading. I used this book as background for an inorganic synthesis project; I am using it for a one-semester inorganic class now (the book was designed for a two-semester class), and I will use it again when I take a higher class in inorganic chemistry.

Definately the Best
I used this book as an alternate text for a graduate level course in chemical hydrogeology.This was by far the best textbook I used.The class text and most others that I used were qualitative texts.This book presents a quantitative approach to equilibrium chemistry.This definately helped clear up several topics and is full of plenty of examples.At the end of the chapters there are suggestions for additional reading and many practice problems.The authors present cchemical kinetics, equilibrium, acid-base reactions, coordination chemistry, precipitation and dissolution, and redox reactions.This book is definately helpful as it goes through many problems step-by-step and is very instructive.

It is a must in a graduate class for environmental engineers
While the level of difficulty compared to other class textbooks is higher, it provides a real world examples of problems environmental engineers find in their field. This book will suit better as a reference book forundergraduate and a textbook for graduate students, it goes beyond theclassic theoretical solutions. One of the authors is a professor in a verygood university in California.You may find this fact very importantbecause many of the theories, formulas and conclusions that are being usedin the industry are contained in this book, and have been derived fromdoctoral work by Ph.D. candidates at that University.You may want to keepthis book as a reference after you have finished your graduate school. Every environmental engineer or scientists must have a copy of this book.Believe me! We used this book at the LMU Graduate Program.

A complex book, not recommened for beginners in water chem.

Solid Inorganic Text
I had this book for my second semester Inorganic class, where we covered point groups and spectroscopy, Ligands (Substitution reactions, Crystal Field Theory, etc), Boranes/Carboranes (Instructor's bias) and Organometallics.
A Good Reference
The text seems well organized, but I only ever used it for a reference.Heavy on group theory, which is good.A nice addition to the chemistry students' text collection.

Lukewarm chemistry
M&T was used for the intro. inorganic chemistry course that I TA'd, and I found that while all off the essential inorganic topics are covered the book focuses primarily on symmetry and molecular orbital theory. Truly, it makes MO theory very accessible (a fine preparation to carrying on with Cotton's Chem. App. of Group Theory). I recommend this textbook for courses and individuals focused on developing these areas, but in terms of physical inorganic chemistry, this book is lacking. There is only one chapter spent on main group chemistry, hardly enough space to mention more than a small spattering of information. The solid state chapter is also disappointingly weak. However, in terms of illustrations and ease of readablity, this book succeeds. Overall, while the book does not miss any "essentials," it does little more than skim a large section of inorganic chemistry. ... Read more

Not Detailed Enough
I realize that this is supposed to be an introductory book, however it does not provide enough detail to be very useful in my 2nd year inorganic chem class. I am extremely disappointed by this since the book costs so much money. I wonder how much more it would cost if it was hardcover.
First Class
I saw this browsing through a bookstore. First class all the way. I use it all the time as a professional research chemist. Really well organized.

My one regret in life is losing this book...
Excellent text and I have been trying to find a copy on it ever since I lost mine... Presents quite a bit of the subject in a very well thought out and organized way...If you ever get the chance, then sit down and take a good look. Serves as a great companion to Cotton and Wilk. The Book Doctors Recommend Most
This is the ideal book for the beginner and in my opinion a must-read. In the excellent translation by Robert O. Gould, "Crystal Structure Determination" by Werner Massa explains all the basics from symmetry in real and reciprocal space, over generation of X-rays and other practical aspects, all the way to structure solution and refinement. Massa keeps the book simple and understandable and uses mathematical formulae carefully and only when helpful or necessary.
Useful tool for all dealing with structure determination
Single crystal structure determination has become an important and extremely powerful tool not only for inorganic and structural chemists but for all kinds of chemists interested in the structures of their compounds. The best Inorganic Book
In my opinion, this book is one of the best books on Inorganic Chemistry. From first edition to last one F.A. Cotton's book becomes better and better. Now, this is excellent comprehensive textbook on Inorganic and Coordination Chemistry.

NICE TEXT FOR UNDERGRAD INORGANIC CHEMISTRY
With this edition of "Advanced Inorganic Chemistry", Albert Cotton and his co-authors have proved that they kept track of all the recent developments in the field. Disappointing
The 5th edition of this book had been compulsory reading during my undergraduate inorganic chemistry courses: it was the inorganic chemistry bible. This edition fails to reach the high standard of its predecessor. In fact, it isn't even a good advanced inorganic chemistry text. Much of the really useful stuff that forms the basis of an understanding of inorganic chemistry has been omitted in favour of niche topics. The book would be better called 'Advances in Inorganic Chemistry' or 'Selected Topics in Inorganic Chemistry'. ... Read more

Clear as a crystal!!!!
This book is a good one. Explains every aspect I always want to know about crystallography. In my first class of biochemistry I discover that I really like the macromolecular models, but my biochemistry book doesn't content much information about this subjet. When I discover this book I bought it, and read it, and I must to say that this book explain every aspect of the process of create a molecular model.
The best introduction to the subject
This is the best introduction to crystallography I have ever come across. Which is quite an achievement, because its a difficult subject to understand. In crystallography, its very rare to find a book which does not deal with either a totally descriptive approach or a totally mathematical approach. Rhodes' book bridges the gap between the two and gives the reader the right dose of jargon and explanation. He illustrates every point with plenty of figures as well as real life computer models of proteins. Before I came across this book, I was struggling and failing to understand Isomorphous Replacement, MAD, Solvent Flattening, Maps and Models, as well as the iterative refining of models. I think no other book comes even close to this book in explaining all these concepts in simple format. This, I think is as clear as it can get without becoming oversimplified. A must have for all researchers and students whose work is even remotely connected to crystallography.

"The" clearest one out there....
When it comes to this field of research, you get two types of references: (1) the 2-5 page quick intro that leaves you with the most basic overview of crystallography and (2) the 'hard core' books that go into such detail as to leave you breathless.This book is, in my opinion, the best transition book.Read more

Great book for reference
I had this book as my textbook for my "surface science"class. It is a great book for reference though it does take time and effort to comb through chapters to find what you need. A lot of detailed paper-review-style chaptors which is great for research while it is a little bit overwhelming to people without any physical chemistry background.

Excellent overview or starting point
How useful and valuable this book is largely depends on what you expect from it.This book provies an overview of the extremely broad field of surface chemistry.As a starting point to learning about that field, this book is excellent.There is validity to the criticisms offered by some other reviewers of this text.The derivations often don't give enough detail and there's not much help in the way of example problems, which can make it difficult for the student to use in a classroom setting.Do not expect extremely detailed and thorough treatments of any particular area of surface chemistry.Nearly any chapter in this book could (and does) have entire texts (and courses) devoted exclusively to that one subject.What you can expect from this book is an introduction to the key areas of surface chemistry.The book is loaded with references to point the interested reader in the right direction for more detailed and thorough treatments of the variety of different areas of surface chemistry.For this reason, I have found it to be a good starting point for learning more about several subjects.In short, this book is excellent if you want a broad overview of the field or need a place to start learning about a particular area of surface chemistry.It's not worth much if you are looking for extremely in depth, thorough treatments of specific areas of surface chemistry.

Physical Chemistry of Surfaces
I used this book as a text in my class 'Physical Chemistry of Liquids, Interfaces, and Colloids'. This book is not a textbook. My students are complaining all the time about the presentation of topics as well as the extent of derivations, interpretations, and lack of examples. I must admit that I have made a mistake for choosing this text for my course. If you are planing to use it as a text, please go through a few of the derivations and you will notice that the book offers very little to a student. ... Read more

Excellent!!! Fundamental and beyond
It is very good for Graduate student working in the area of any kind of deformation behavior of materials. This book is very helpful for understanding from fundamental concepts to dislocations and the related phenomena.

One of the classic texts on "The Concept of a Dislocation"
This classic text is a complete treatise on the concept of dislocations and their interactions with various other defects in crystalline materials. The dislocation concept is built up using basic theory of linear elasticity (Part 1 of the text). Hence, this book is ideal for someone with an elaborate background in Mechanics/Elasticity and looking to extend their backgroud in Crystal Plasticity from a Materials Science perspective. Parts 2-4 of the book will be of particular interest, as they deal with substantial Materials Science issues important at the atomic/meso-scale level. Read more

Tungstenopliles, look no further
After groveling and scraping for every little tungsten factoid I could find, this book was more welcome than a healed disciple at an evangelical fund raiser. What EXACTLY is ferrotungsten? Got it (including some typicalchemistries). Lightbulb filaments? Photonic Crystals For Beginners
Keeping in mind, I started my research in photonic crystals with my advisor referring me to this book.So, I am speaking as a first-year graduate student with basic physics background.Hopefully, you come in this category of inexperience looking for some advice on approaching a difficult subject to understand.My only suggestion is to ask around your research group for other reading materials and also get to know your library well.In any case, you can also check out my profile which has a listing of optics and photonic crystal books that can help you out as well.So, I just wanted to let you know where I am coming from since other reviewers might be educators who already have a good understanding of photonic crystals.In some ways, it pretty much assumes alot of knowledge like my advisor who assumed me to be much the same which I was not.
Excelent Introductory Book
"Photonic Crystals" is an excelent startpoint for those who want to understand how we can control and use wisely the light. The book starts with a basic introduction starting from Maxwell equations and develops the whole theory necessary to understand the propagation of light in 1D, 2D and 3D periodic structures. It is not directed for those who want to know what is being done today in the research field but rather it is an excelent introduction for beginners. Highly recommended.

This is a fish of a good book! The information that has come out in the last ten years about photonic band-gap materiels can be confusing and offputting. This book enables any astute reader a comprehension of the various properties that come into play when dealing with and controlling the propogation of light.
