Desperately needs larger font and photos.
I am a geologist, but for heaven's sake, pics at least as good as a cheap field guide would be in order, especially for some of the more unusual minerals. Would also love to see some of the zillions of examples of granites that you can find at your average kitchen type granite center. The geology though is good, just a bit dry.

Do yourself a favor - don't buy this book
I think the Danas would be embarrassed if they lived to see their name on the cover of this book - probably the worst compendium of mineralogical data in the history of science. Here, inaccuracies and errors are the norm rather than exception, and the quality of print and paper are no match even to a circa-1900 missionary's Bible. Sloppy sources like this one do more harm than good by perpetuating errors and introducing new ones, so do yourself a favor and spend your hard-earned $350 on something else.

Long-awaited reference needs work
As a professional geologist, I use this reference often but I have foundnumerous errors. An example is that the mineral Pentlandite, an importantore of nickel, is not listed in the index. A German website is compiling anerrata list on this book and it is many pages long of spelling, locality,formulae and indices errors. Other complaints are: The informationconcerning the economic use of the minerals is too sketchy and incomplete;and the page paper is too thin and fragile. ... Read more

decent book (and discount that creationist review)
First, to actually say something about this book, it's a solid and comprehensive look at a burgeoning field. The use of radiogenic isotopes as geochemical tracers and for age determinations of various sorts is now a crucial component of studies of all parts of the Earth system. Inevitably, a single text that tries to cover such a diverse suite of rapidly developing subdisciplines will run into some glitches and not be completely current, but Dickin has provided a very good starting point for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course in isotope geochemistry and/or geochronology. Geochemistry of Natural Waters
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters.I found this to be a very poor text to use.The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving.I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry.I would not recommend use of this text.

Needs Work
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student.The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry.The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater.In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater.Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times.I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.Read more

Very Good Reference Text
This is a great text full of useful information on over 400 chemicals.The text offers informationon melting point, density, Henry's law constant,soil sorption coefficient, octanol/water partition coefficient, solubility in organics and water, vapor density and pressure.The text includes a section on each chemical discussing environmental fate, toxicity, drinking water standard and use of each chemical.I've found this book very helpful over the last 10 years. ... Facilitates learning
Faure wrote a book with all the technicalities of geochemistry in an easy-to-follow manner. Very good balance of principles and forumlae relative to other Geochemistry books I have used. I borrowed 3 Geochem books from the library (including Faure) for a coarse I am taking and 95% of the time, I find myself using Faure.

Faures principles and apps of geochem
This is an excellent text for geology / earth science undergraduates and graduates covering pretty much all the fundamental geochemistry topics. Itis generally very readable with material presented in a logical andcoherent fashion. The sections regarding geochemical thermodynamics and theconstruction of Eh / pH diagrams are especially well presented. Aquatic Chemistry text for introductory course
I used this text for a one-quarter introductory Aquatic Chemistry course.The tableau method to solve equilibrium problems was positively received only by about half the students.Other texts used for this course are Pankow and Stumm and Morgan.(None of them were free of difficulties.Stumm and Morgan still serves as the best reference; but readability is a problem for an introductory course.)Morel does a good job in the treatment of metal ion kinetics.

Another book on catchment hydrology?
A decently attempted foray into an otherwise exciting, yet overexamined academic topic.Catchment Hydrology is a field on the verge ofmedia saturation, it seems that every scholar has his new catchment hydrology theory he is willing to espouseto packed lecture halls and cable tv hosts throughout the nation. A definitive, practical text on crystal growing.
I first used this book in 1963 as a tutorial on crystal growing It's a keeper!
I've had this book for well over 20 years, and every couple of years I get it back out, re-read it and try a few new experiments. This book would be good for a child (with supervision) who is interested in cause-and-effectsrelations of science.Some simple crystal experiments may be carried outin hours, some take longer.Read more
