4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books on comparing specialties
I would recommend this book to the undecided medical students in their 3rd year- I bought this early in my 4th year after having read Anita's book on Choosing a Medical Specialty, and still being uncertain. I was trying to talk myself out of Gen Surg... Ultimately, a book is not going to make the decision for you, but it is good to be informed and it helps to either reinforce what your gut instinct is telling you. Try to borrow a friends or buy a used copy- but it's definitely worth a read!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great advise for the single med student
This book has great advise in it for the single med student. However, if you happen to be married and a parent most of the advise is far too time consuming and impractical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
A good read, especially given information from both professionals and those currently in residency.Current as of late '03...so still relevant information.I'm an MS1 and enjoyed the book as it gives me a much better idea of many specialties/subs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book before investing in wind power!
Unless you already work in the wind industry (and even if you do) this book is invaluable. It contains very detailed information of nearly all aspects of wind power.I've only had this book several weeks and have not yet purchased a wind mill.I especially like the sections on towers, safety and the comparison charts for many models of turbines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Its bulk information & know-how represented in the most fluent manner possible. Its like getting a course of wind energy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wind Power, Revised Edition: Renewable Energy for Home, Farm, and Business
This is a very practical book for the wind energy enthusiast, thinking of setting up their own wind generator. It has got plenty of advice on the wind generators to buy and the models to avoid. The book has loads of web references, photographs and safety information. All the information in the book is presented in a clear and concise fashion. You don't need an engineering degree to understand this book.Overall I found this book to be a really good reference and well worth the money. I would recommend it to readers interested in renewable energy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great American and the exciting story of his experience at NASA.
Reading Gene Kranz's experience as mission controller at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration brought back childhood dreams of being a "space man". Gene Kranz lead an exciting life, and he relates his story through exciting tales from is tenure at NASA.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous as a Source Text
Let's be very upfront on one point: Kranz is not a gifted prose writer. He is a celebrity as a flight director, a competent test pilot, a keystone of one of the finest scientific and engineering achievements in the history of mankind, and probably one of the excellent leaders of the last century. But he is not a gifted writer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gene Kranz - Biographical review - Leadership in Space exploration
Having been interested in this period of the initial years of the space program, I was hoping to gleen more insite into events and people during this period. I was not let down as some of the details and specifically the difficult logistics of operations was layed out and described. All this without the technology that we have today for satellite communication/Internet etc. Superb description of the Apollo 11 landings and mindset for success of the Apollo 13 events, showing the stunning and legendary team building abilities and decision making insites of the period. Worth reading for anyone interested in those years of Space Exploration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful guide.
I found this book very helpful. It started by going through the PA profession, and then got into how to actually go about making this a career. It explains each step of the application process, and gives very helpful tips.Overall, this was a great book.I would highly recommend it for anyone considering entering the PA profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but outdated
I found the information about interviewing helpful but much of the information about the application itself was outdated. The book was written before CASPA was widely used. Also, the author provides a personal website and encourages readers to contact him with any questions, but this website is no longer around. This book is a good cheap purchase, but no substitute for advice from current students.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book for any aspiring PA prospect!!
I purchased this book the summer of 2005 to begin my "preparations" for entry into the 2006 application cycle. I had aquired all of my prerequisites for the program I was interested in and wanted all of the ammunition I could get my hands on in preparation for the interview process. This book gave me perfect guidance in all aspects of the application process. And if I can do it, OH MY!, anyone can do it!! (If you only knew me ten years ago!) Although I do have a few years of medical experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist under my belt, I applied to only ONE school this year and I just received the call last week for the acceptance! My first go round and I couldn't have asked for more. As competetive as most medical programs are this book, I believe, gave me THE edge to succeed. I can't praise the book enough for all of the insights this book includes, From written preparations to speaking patterns and interview scenerios. A year ago I was sitting in the same chair you were wondering if it was just a crock. Buy it! It is the cheapest book you'll purchase through your entire program. What do have to lose? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A technical approach towards causality
This is a very interesing book that Judea Pearl worte. The topic is currently of general interest for diverse fields as economics, social sciences and biology, however, this book is not intended for practitoners from these field who face a special problem and search for a possible solution. If you want to buy this book for this reason you will not be able to extract this information for this book. The reason therefor is that important technics like Bayesian Networks or Structural Equations are treated in 3 pages in each case. Judea Pearl assumes that the reader is already familiar with such methods beforehand. (Readers interested in the later subject are strongly refered to Bollen's book "Structural Equations with latent variables".)
4-0 out of 5 stars What is the cause of intolerance?

5-0 out of 5 stars Important but difficult
The scientific research community has adopted rigorous methods to eliminate the need for subjective judgments about many things, but when it comes to testing whether X causes Y, they revert to intuition and hand-waving. This book makes a strong argument that we shouldn't accept that. It demonstrates that it is possible to turn intuitions about causation into hypotheses that are unambiguous and testable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great review of network reconstructions
While this may not be an all encompassing review of what systems biology is, it provides an insightful view on network reconstruction. I've found this book very helpful and well written (being a first edition, it does have a few typos, but this is normal). 5-0 out of 5 stars Thought-stimulating
I really like this book. Its design is atypical for a "question-book" in that the format is not multiple choice; rather, the author(s) intend for the reader to reflect upon their theoretical and practical knowledge-base before formulating an answer. This makes this book thought-stimulating as opposed to standard multiple choice books, which may be good, but you will most assuridly never see those "same" multiple choice questions and answer-options replicated on an actual board exam. Good book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A battle to read, not worth it in the end.
I was going to write a long and detailed review of this book outlining its many minor and few major flaws. However I notice with these types of books, with controversial subjects, tend to get reviews of two types: If you agree with the subject matter, it was well written. If you don't, it is poorly written.
2-0 out of 5 stars you ought to try walking in their shoes, first
The thing the author does is pass judgment without looking at how the "bad guys" did what they did.An action officer or technical executive has very little time to make decisions.Because the subject matter of the necessary decisions comes from all points of the intellectual compass, the folks under discussion literally cannot be as informed as they would like to be on every thing they must act on.And they must act.Quickly.Excuses for inaction are never acceptable in this business.
3-0 out of 5 stars Seeing the Pentagon from the Inside
The best aspect of this book is that it leaves you asking, "God, if she found all that in one crazy project, what else is out there?"The book is about the (Hafnium)Hf bomb and how it went from nothing to a multi-million dollar project that refused to die.

Editorial Review

This surprising book may appear to be about the simple things of life--forks, paper clips, zippers--but in fact it is a far-flung historical adventure on the evolution of common culture. To trace the fork's history, Duke University professor of civil engineering Henry Petroski travels from prehistoric times to Texas barbecue to Cardinal Richelieu to England's Industrial Revolution to the American Civil War--and beyond. Each item described offers a cultural history lesson, plus there's plenty of engineering detail for those so inclined. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All about the context
I found this book to be very illuminating in light of what I do (interaction design) and the books I have read recently on the latest in computational neuroeconomics, maninstream pattern recognotion theory, interaction design, visual design, industrial design, computer engineering, new marketing theory, and information design around complex systems. In fact, this book is almost a stake in the ground on how the manufacturing process, invention, and branding created the artifacts in our environment. Better than the Industrial Desig books I read 10 years ago. I think we would call these "case studies" and "use cases" in modern terminology. I mention all the fields above because every single one of them have an exact doppelganger in the past.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
while I agree with some of the previous reviews that Petroski may overstate and repeat a little bit, this book is an excellent in depth look at the invention process as practiced by many people in parallel and in concert.
5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opener!
Ideal for anyone who harbours a casual interest in forks, pins, paper clips and zippers. Not recommended for people who hate forks, pins, paper clips and zippers, or people who are obsessed with forks, pins, paper clips and zippers and already know how they came to be as they are. ... Read more

Charles Seife's books do more than just aim for that,

5-0 out of 5 stars Serendipitous...
As well as being extremely detailed, intelligent and helpful, this book is hysterically funny, which makes it a joy to read and easy to understand. A nice change from the usual ...yawn... science-reference manuals. I would strongly encourage other students to take advantage of this terrific piece of work.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
This book promise so much by the wide coverage of topics in Organic lab. but it delivers nothing. Aside from listing the topics in the Table of content. The seemingly knowledable Prof. Zubric presents an unorganize, incomprehensible 294 pages of something that read like a page from a low budget Comic Strip. Am shock that a well respected publishing house like John Wiley and Son would lend their reputation to a low quality like this. The author talked about every thing that are irrelevant. what is needed is a good intro. to the subject like -EXTRACTION and then the stepwise layout of professional quality discussion of headings like - Materials involved; procedure; observation; conclusion etc. he fail to approach the subject prof. The book would pass for a Book of Short Jokes. Do not waste your money. D BOOK DID NOT HELP ME IN MY CLASS ANYWAY...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the content and organization of a proposal
Friedland and Folt provide a very nice, concise guide to writing research proposals. They go over the organization of the proposal, what is important to get across in what sections, and also touch on the "storytelling" aspects, such as funneling from broad themes to specifics.I also found useful the list a range of funding sources.5-0 out of 5 stars Frieland and Folt a Success
Friedland and Folt are the Strunk and White of proposal writing. They have written a clear, concise guide to scientific proposal writing that captures the essence of the scientific enterprise.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for young ecologists
This is a wonderful book. As a graduating senior in Ecology, I can say that there is no way I could have completed my research without this book. Krebs is cited in journal articles constantly, and there is a reason - this reference work is thorough, well written and gives many examples to follow. I also recommend the EcoMeth software mentioned in the text, it is well worth the cost. Just browsing through the book will give you ideas on how to analyze your data. It even provides wonderful advice for those just in the process of setting up their experiments. All in all, it's top notch!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference text
Krebs' text is a thorough and outstanding reference for any ecologist. This is is the ideal balance of technical background and practical application of methods commonly used in ecology. Ive found other sources either too cursory or far too involved with derivations of formulae, etc. Krebs hits the major points for the methods he discusses, describes the strengths and weaknesses, and gives the original citations (for most) so the reader can seek more information if necessary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Researcher and Lecturer in Financial Ecometrics
James Ramsey has written the ideal introductory statistics text for those with inquisitive minds. Ramsey's The Elements of Statistics with Applications to Economics and the Social Sciences presents an insightful, but accessible approach to the processes of statistical reasoning and problem solving. There are plenty of well-developed and realistic case studies that offer the reader straightforward explanations of the statistical reasoning used in setting up the problem solution.Ramsey does not just present statistics as facts and numbers; the why's and how's behind the use of specific statistical tools required in case studies and other examples are addressed in a straight forward and simple to understand manner. This contrasts most contemporary introductory statistics texts where it seems there is always an attempt to be the biggest encyclopedia of statistical examples. Ramsey's style of exposition offers the reader the depth and perspective required to facilitate both the current and future statistical requirements of the reader. In short, this is one of the few introductory texts that allow the reader to attain a stable grounding in the field of statistics on one hand, and on the other, will still be a useful reference throughout one's professional career.I highly recommend Ramsey's text as both a starter text and as a reference for those looking to clarify their fundamental statistical queries.

This book is a wonderful introductory statistics text. In contrast to the usual extensive approach in which students are exposed to a large cookbook of statistical procedures that end up being memorized 'for the exam,' this text operates on the intensive margin in a successful effort to provide the conscientious student a far deeper introduction to statistical reasoning and practice.5-0 out of 5 stars The Elements of Statistics - A Review
The Elements of Statistics: with Applications to Economics and the Social Sciences by James B. Ramsey is an innovative and excellent undergraduate level text on the foundations and reasoning of statistics estimation and inference. This book is written for the curious student who is interested in understanding the basics of statistical analysis, the intuition behind statistical and information processing, and the process of decision making based on some data. Most importantly, in this book Ramsey takes the student through a fascinating voyage of discovery. In this voyage, Ramsey devotes significant effort to explaining what are the fundamental rules underlying most data analyses within the social and natural sciences. This is done without requiring much prior knowledge of calculus and with almost no formal mathematics. Ramsey accomplishes this task by building on a large number of real world examples, some of which he re-evaluates at the end of each chapter. By doing so, he allows the reader (student or researcher) to see the real value of the knowledge just acquired in the most recent chapter. That is, "what can I understand now about that specific problem that I could not understand before." In that way the student is going through an on-going learning process. A process that allows one to understand the data by recognizing what is observed and what is not observed, what is random and what is not random, what process may have generated the data, and what one can infer from the data.Read more
