5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written
I liked this book because it does a great job explaining the concepts and the reasoning behind the mathematical formulae. Other books such as "The Elements of Statistical Learning" toss the Math formulas at you and expect you to figure out the significance or the importance of 'em. The book does not shy away from Math - but does a great job presenting it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to top machine learning techniques
Duda's 'Pattern Classification' is an excellent book for an introduction to a range of the most powerful and popular machine learning methods. Obviously it doesn't go into very many details of each method - being just one book - but it covers the most important things to know imo. Not quite the 20% that covers 80% of the needs, but close. It is well written and the illustrations are generally of high quality. If you don't want to drown in a nightmare of details and exceptions, but rather get a good basic understanding of the various techniques, this book is an excellent buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to pattern recognition, but not a bible.
[1] This book is good as an introduction to Pattern Recognition, at undergraduate level (compared with the level of Fukunaga's -Introduction to Statistical Pattern Recognition-).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Product, Horrible Price
Works great and is useful but very expensive for what you get.Hopefully the disposalable pen market won't go with these prices or they'd be about $10.00 each :) lol

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful toy
For a non-specialist like me, it's a bit daunting to try to develop intuition about how simple molecules are put together. It really helps to have a physical model, especially for subtle ideas like multiple stereocenters and 3D structures. This kit is a great way to help visualize and understand simple chemical systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Biochem book
I had this textbook for Biochem 1 and 2 and I thought it was excellent. It went in-depth when it was needed. The authors choose to leave out some reactions (using multiple arrows) and I thought that was great because it wasn't really needed in most cases.Sometimes there were questions though on how to get to one structure from the last.Pictures were great and really helped to picture what was going on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
I really like this book.It does a great job of explaining the topics in detail, yet not too esoteric that one without a background in either biology or chemistry won't be able to understand.I have neither and I feel I am progressing along well.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent resource for Orgo beginners
Orgo (I, II) was the most difficult subject I EVER had. I've taken both sections over and went through 2 books. The strengths of this particular book are its reaction summaries: before introducing a topic, the author dedicates a page or two to summarizing the reactions that lead up to this topic and then summarizes the reactions of the topic once he's through explaining it. Example: 'Reactions That Yield Alcohols' and then `Reactions of Alcohols'. Summaries are accompanied by short, yet thorough descriptions. With elaborate and comprehensive reaction mechanisms, this book is more of a reference that a textbook, although the text is inclusive and relatively simple. If you understand the lectures and use this book for mechanisms, reactions and problems, rather that for understanding concepts, you'll be fine.
3-0 out of 5 stars In Peripatetic Style, Carey Waxes Tirelessly While Avoiding the Point
Ok, perhaps I'm being a little harsh. Whether or not you enjoy this book by the esteemed Professor Emeritus Dr. Carey (Virginia ) depends largely on the teaching methods you embrace. Personally, I am the "Joe Friday" of students. Just the facts please unless and until I ask for more. As I read Carey, I envision a group of gangly sophomores following their Professor around their Jeffersonian campus as their teacher drops morsels of wisdom and his students anxiously retrieve them. As the brisk walk comes to a close, Professor Carey will guide you back to the classroom from where you originally departed and tell you all that you really needed to know about organic chemistry.
3-0 out of 5 stars Organic book
The book was fine. It's our class textbook and it was cheaper new that it was used in the bookstore at school. However, I had problems with it being shipped with me. The street I live on got renumbered and UPS was unable to find my house. I ended up picking it up from their offices even though I paid to have it shipped next day. So that was a huge hassle with amazon and their shipper UPS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
this book is awsome it has everything cover for every body system.., its very well explained, has great pictures, great diagrams, great color for diferent parts of the book, divisions, quizes, questions ... its a super book mainly for understanding simple concepts that in other books are very bad explained or with a lot of text.. This book explains the important stuff not with a lot of details as other books you will understand quickly.... Excellent for medschool, i use it for a first reading on the subject and then after understandig the subject and having an idea of it.I read other physiology book and add stuff that didn't mentioned to my notes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Anatomy and Physiology Textbook
I used the third edition of this textbook when I was enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology I and II in college twenty three years ago. It is still used by the college I attended. The present edition (11th edition) which I purchased is the number one Anatomy and Physiology textbook. It explains every anatomical term and concept very well. The artwork is fabulous in showing the Anatomy and different Physiological processes. It is the best Anatomy and Physiology textbook for a two semester Anatomy and Physiology course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, David griffiths
This book is wonderful news to anyone who is frustrated with Jackson, or alternatively, is an excellent preface to it; Chapter 1 is particularly helpful as it presents all the necessary vector analysis, and is filled with illuminating geometrical interpretations to otherwise obscure mathematical creatures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poorly written.
I had to buy this book for an introductory graduate stats class. This book assumes you have some knowledge of stats and so provides very brief explanations for most concepts. This is a big problem for students with little or no stats background. 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The text we used for our undergrad Stats class covered the exact same material as this text, which we used for a graduate level class and which cost about 60 bucks more, but the undergrad text was written more clearly, concisely and logically. We even found a mistake in one of the tables in the back of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Books like this are the reason people abandon physics!
I am by no means incompetent, as I am an honors student and have no problem getting strait A's in calculus, linear algebra and object oriented programming, but this book is abysmal and almost impossible to follow. The book is horrible on so many levels.First off, many of the chapters start off throwing equations at you, and offer no clarity as to the purpose of the equation. The text very poorly explains concepts and the problems given throughout the book are even worse. The problems given during the chapters literally throw information out at you that was'nt ever touch upon in the entire chapter, and to make matters worse, i've counted 4 problems that have incorrect solutions, and thats only chapter 2!This is a very poorly written, even worse explained book.I dont mind sadistically difficult problems at the end of a chapter, if the book did a good job of teaching me the concepts and computations to answer the problem, unfortunately this book does neither.Whats funny is that our teacher started the semester by saying, he does'nt like the book, but were using it while he researches a better book for us to use.Sadly, I could have walked into a book store, and grabbed ANY physics book, and it would have been better then this one.Luckily I have several other physics books that peice together the missing information for me, but for a textbook that students depend on to learn the subject, it should'nt be required.

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible text- worst text I've ever had to buy
I am a chemistry teacher and I am taking a college physics course as a review for an exam. The text has problems worked out but they are difficult to follow, and the problems at the end of the chapter are entirely impossible. It seems one person wrote the text and a different person wrote the end of text questions and another wrote the solutions. I am using other texts to help but unfortunately my teacher requires me to solve problems from this text. May God bless everyone who has to use this text. Teachers, professors, please rethink using this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Statistics for Dummies is the bomb
I am very impressed with the Statistics for Dummies book. It is well written and really helped me grasp a basic understanding of statistics. The formulas that the author has provided are very helpful. The author really knows her stuff and has written a book that can help everyone understand the complex world of statistics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro - clear but too repetitive
Definitely does the job it sets out to do but could have done it without so much repetition hence only gets 3 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the college refresher I'd hoped for
This book covers material that would be found in the early to mid-level phases of a college Statistics course. I was hoping for a deeper refresher, short of re-reading my college texts and notes, and this wasn't the place to find it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure it's good, and a good price by the pund too!
A pretty good overview and a lot of in-depth material on Multivariate data analysis. Not quite a bed time read though.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good for a second stats course & reference
We used this book for our Stats 2 course in grad school, and although our professor was good enough to eclipse Hair, et al. (he had written his own Stats text), I am most pleased at how much mileage I have drawn from Hair, et al. in the years since I took the course. In my subsequent career, reviewers have often sent me back to Hair, et al. when they have questions about something I'm doing with a data analysis, so it has become an invaluable reference for that reason alone.
4-0 out of 5 stars simple but great!!
I used this book as a reference on the topics while I was working on a research project at the university. Because the book does not use complex mathematics to explain the multivariate statistics, it is easy for social sciences students to understand. Each chapter starts with an overview, step-by step procedures and ends with an example from the data set that is used throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one to have
If you want one book on Categorical Data analysis, this is the one.But there are others that are easier to read, if your math is not great (including the same author's book with an almost identical title)

2-0 out of 5 stars Good reading, but how do I analyze my data?
In the theoretical sense, this book provides a very thorough overview of categorical data analysis. However, this book should not be used as a reference for the scientist needing to do the occasional number crunching of categorical data. The examples are vague and the tests are not well explained. If you want to derive the tests, this book is for you.If you're not a statistician at heart and just want the answer, I suggest looking at Conover's "Practical Nonparametric Statistics" for a good explanation of which tests to use and how to use them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic, made even better
This is a very demanding, thorough, and clear description of just about everything anyone could want to know on the subject. The second edition is considerably more rigorous than the first.Agresti stresses that logistic models are one kind of generalized linear model. This offers solid connections to many other models, but places corresponding demands on the reader. In particular, Chapter 4 is difficult going, but might be skipped or skimmed on first reading.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning update of a classic
When I went to update this with my handwritten notes made on the second edition I found that the material had already been added.Much improved over the older edition with more information on alternate species, constituents, pao zhi and modern uses.It still has the annoying multiple indexes but at least they are thumb indexed. Well worth the investment for owners of earlier editions who actively use herbal medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important, but flawed?
My copy of this book is full of printing errors, including chapter summaries that are incomplete and index page numbers that are as many as two pages off.I expect much more from Eastland Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and understandable introduction to chemistry
While most of the one year chemistry texts cover more or less the same principles, the order varies, the illustrations are similar, but they vary most in the way they explain the material. It is in the vocabulary they use and develop that helps the student develop the intuitions, understanding, and skills the authors are after. This is a very well written text that is useful for non-chemistry majors as well as science students needing an introductory course in chemistry.
4-0 out of 5 stars solid text, no overall change from previous edition
I wrote the review below for the previous edition (9), and having seen the tenth edition, most of my subjects of complaints and praises pretty much remain the same.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for IB students
The textbook delivers great diagrams, good for virtual learners. Fancy words are rarely used. It also corresponds well with the IB Chemistry syllabus. If you are thinking about ordering Chemistry textbook, and if you are an international student who are not so strong at English, this textbook is good to go.

If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentials grounded!!
I feel this is a very good textbook for molecular biology rookies as well as for pros wanting to revive their concepts ... Molecular Biology of the Cell could serve as an excellent companion book or rather reference book for this textbook ... the cd provided along with theEssential Cell Biology book is a great tool to understand the way things work ... in short, it is a must book for mol bio students to know what they are doing and to do things better:) It could also serve as a great book for biomedical engineers to grasp more of biology and engineer the concepts better. The book is definitely more simplified (kinda an abridged version) and easier to understand than "Molecular Biology of the Cell". Although, the size of the latter makes it look more formidable for beginners, I must add it is indeed a great reference book for researchers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good and Basic

4-0 out of 5 stars Great intro book!
This book is for those wanting an easy reading introduction. Its very informative, well put together and easy to follow with adequate graphics.(I hated the questions at the end of each chapter though, ok lets face it they were easy you just had to really think about them).
2-0 out of 5 stars HARD TO FOLLOW
I just finished my biology class with this text book.Over all I was very disappointed in this book.I read each chapter that was assigned to us by the professor and worked my study guides but still came out of the each chapter more confused. With the jargon they put in this text book it doesn't do the student any favors in the layouts you will need to spend time to investigate some of the information on your own to obtain a better understanding of BIOLOGY.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read book that still avoids over-simplification
Although Life on Earth is meant to be a textbook, I find it to be an excellent reference book. The design does not force the reader to begin at the first chapter and read sequentially.Terms are explained in clearenglish, and the glossary is very thorough.Illustrations are well-drawnand fitting, and the layout is easy on the eyes. Also, the chapter summaryafter each section is invaulable to students.I cannot recommend this bookmore to anyone who is interested in Biology or needs a reference book aboutthe workings of life on Earth. ...
