Enlightening
This is a really useful book for those who work in the healthcare industry.I found the stories to be enlightening and inspiring.The book is a great tool for those who want to better understand how to cross the many functional divides within healthcare.It also provided for me several facilitative tools that I could use to initiate dialogue between disparate parties.

Better Communication for Better Care.
This book, a nice blend of issues and opportunities relating to physician-executive relationships, is based on well researched materials coupled with very relevant case studies. The publication is concise, to the point and an easy read. I would recommend this book both for both new and seasoned administrators-it is an excellent summary of what it takes to ensure successful medical staff-hospital relations.
Timely
One of the the most vexing problems our community hospitals CEO's face is their relationship with the private medical staff. In a period of declining reimbursement, high malpractice costs and increasing administrative costs that place great presssure on physicians to act with greater self interest it is easy to have a breakdown in communications. This book goes a long way in helping one to realize that neither party is powerless in a situation of a seemingly misalignment of objectives. A must read for people in this field
The study conducted by the author reveals some issues and practices that need to be considered by everyone in the field of healthcare interpreting. Doctors' Marriages: A Look at the Problems and Their Solutions
My husband and I are both physicians; I work part time to take care of our 1 year old.He is still building his practice; so you can imagine our lives are a bit hectic.The book gave us a better perspective on what each other is going through in terms of stressors. Pretty special...
I'm presently working my way through PA school, and this book has a ring to it I can't seem to keep out of my ears.Each new situation or patient I'm with brings back the words Selzer uses to present his stories.I'd strongly recommend it as a gift to those in MD or PA school--besides being outstanding writing, its fun to see the many ways medicine has changed, coupled with the countless ways it remains the same.Read especially "A Pint of Blood"...no matter how many times I read it, it still has me laughing.

Notes from a veteran doctor's perspective, excellent writing
Having read Doctor's stories first, I was prepared for Richard Selzer's excellent writing.This book must be the origin of some of the stories that wound up in Doctor Stories (Imelda, Impostor, Chatterbox) Good but not great.Score: 7
Under the old Amazon.com ranking system, I would give this book a seven on a ten point scale.As a fellow surgeon who enjoys Selzer's writings, I thought this was a good, yet not great collection of ruminations.Some ofthe chapters were quite touching, some were funny, and some were quiteplain.A few actually suffered from Selzer's exuberant imagination as hetried to stuff meaning and metaphor into patients' stories that didn't fit. Deeply insightful regarding the philantropic benefit of European colonialism
This book is a very frank account of a French medical missionary's experiences in Central Africa. The length to which Schweitzer went to ease the suffering of the native tribes is touching and displays a great deal of empathy and dedication. It showcases the concern of a medically advanced society for the less fortunate. The number of lives saved by the provision of modern European medicine that would certainly have been lost without his intervention is deeply disturbing.

deeply offensive for us natives of Gabon
I read this book out of curiosity because my grandmother remembers Dr. Schweitzer very well. I found this book very offensive because of the imperialistic language of "superior Europeans coming to the rescue of inferior childlike Blacks". He calls us "children of nature" and "savages." Read the book, it's all in there.

Candid and well written
This book will have most of its appeal to those with interest in medicine, missionary work, or anthropology.It consists of Schweitzer's medical case histories, travels, hospital administrative chores, reflections on African and European culture, and general overview of his first decade and a half in Gabon on the west coast of Africa.Schweitzer's candid comments about the Africans and the harsh conditions under which he worked help make this book better than the average account of third world philanthropic endeavors.Schweitzer shows true insight and compassion for those he came to help and I found the book highly engaging. ... It is always good to read the text before...
The book is based on some solid quantitative studies and it is important that we read the text first before inclining to accept any particular views invoked by reviews. I suggest that you read the text first and then make your mind based on your reading.

Great frame of reference for intro to debate on euthanasia!

Many errors
I began using this book when I started my pathology course along with Basic Pathology by Cotran. In the first chapter alone, there were 3 obvious errors on cell injury and adaptation. The author is a resident in Orthopedics. What gives him credentials to publish a book about pathology? Just be cautious when using books not written by experts in the subject matter. I threw the book away rather than sell or give it away.

On Identify, Gender, England and being a Palestinian Refugee
This is truly an outstanding work. The search and confusion of identity is made even more difficult when one is a Palestinian refugee. Add to this the issue of gender and Ghada Karmi assertion of herself and her rights and you get a fascinating indeed thrilling mix. The first third of the book deals with the exodus from Jerusalem ..it is very moving and sad to see the events rushing to make little Ghada and her family refugees. In the next part we see Ghada the British emerging and finally with all the contradiction between home, school (with mostly Jewish friends) and the society at large especially with backdrop of the 1956 Suez war. The third and final part is the return and the contradictions of identities and the battle to assert herself as a single woman working for the cause. Ghada's move from the completely apolitical to the activist as part of her search of identity is very well nuanced and gives us a great insight into the meaning of being a Palestinian refugee.
Inside the mind of a dislocated Palestinian
This book is like a narrative of two different lives: the end of one and the beginning of another. Two lives that are not independent of each other though, as remnants of the one may not be overpowering to the point of eliminating the other, but are certainly powerful enough to haunt it, shape it, give it its final form.

This is a wonderful book that shows the humnan tragedy of becoming a refugee. In this case, the book talks about a refugee of the 1948 war for Palestine. While the book explains how the creation of the state of Israel have shattered the lives of three quarter million palestnians, it tells the story of one of them.
