5-0 out of 5 stars Very Very cool book
My son loves dinosaurs but had outgrown alot of the kids books out there. This is a great book for older kids and adults will like it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great eye candy for your inner child, and for your other children if you decide to share
This book produced much glee in my house the day it arrived, gasps of joy and amazement, awe and delight. One of these days I'll let my kids look at it, too. I enjoyed it so much that I promptly bought Sabuda's "Alice in Wonderland," "The Wizard of Oz," and another Encylopedia Prehistorica volume, "Sharks And Other Sea Monsters." They're all sensational.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome gift for kids and adults alike!
This book is just simply amazing. When you open each page you cannot stop but to wonder how on earth do they figure out how to not only design and engineer its illustrations but also how to implement it and still manage to sell it at a reasonable price. The content is very informative and educational. Definitely something that one can re-read with interest for many years. It also works great as a reference book for children and it could very easily be helpful for one of their school projects. Speaking of school, instead of getting a mug as an appreciation book for your kid's school teacher, consider offering this book. It is money well spent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible
I was in awe when my son received the Dinosaur book for Christmas from his Grandfather. I saw this book in a Parents magazine and had to get it based on the fact that the Dino one was incredible. My 3 year old loves it! It's not a book to let him play with unless you want it destroyed. Instead, this book allows us to make some quality time for each other when we sit down and look through it. It's very informational, and as he grows older I'm sure he'll read it, but at this point the pop-ups are worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves the book
This is a very interesting book.My 5-year old has really enjoyed the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Pop-up books.
A Great Book to Read With the Kid on your lap. Probably best for kids in the couple or three grades. Best for kids on your lap because pop-up books are rather fragile. Grabbing the nose of the shark and using it as a handle to lug the book around is likely to lose the nose to your shark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to chapter books for pre-k age
We actually picked up a four of the Magic Tree House books to give chapter books a try with our 4 year old. He absolutely is enthralled with these. We have already returned to the book store twice for a total of 8 more and I'm sure we will be going back for more.
4-0 out of 5 stars Son received as a b-day present
When he got the first boxed set for his birthday, he wasn't too enthused by it. Up to that point, him reading on his own was like trying to pull teeth. So I bribed him by saying for every book he read, I would give him a dollar.
5-0 out of 5 stars Magic Tree House (Volumes 1-4)
This was a gift for my granddaughter. My daughter writes: "Suspenseful . . . interesting.Erin can't wait for each chapter. With other books she falls asleep while I read;with these books she asks me to stop so she doesn't miss anything. We are reading no. 5 'Night of the Ninjas' and recently saw a samari suit in the museum (where Andy Warhol is showing) and there are Samari in this book.As a parent I wish there was a little more history in each book, but I think they are age appropriate."

4-0 out of 5 stars insightful delightful, but not easy to read "Un" autobiography
WILD HARMONIES is an insightful delightful "Un" autobiography that breaks the rules of chronological order most books in that genre follow.Instead, the renowned French pianist is all over the place yet contains enough discipline so that the reader can follow her story. Most interesting is the combining of a love for music with a love for wolves. The music started as an unmanageable and unpredictable child in France while the love of wolves began as an adult in Florida when she met her neighbor's she-wolf.As she did with the piano Helene Grimaud became an obsessed fanatic who has opened up a wolverine conservatory in Upstate New York.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book!
This book has been invaluable to me for years. In coming across an animal in life or in dreams, I have derived much insight from the lifecyle and meaning of the animal, and have applied the lessons to my own life.Whether it was a blue jay dying in front of me, or an elephant communicating with me at the circus, we co-exist with the animals on this blue planet and need to hear what they are saying.I also recommend "From the Horses Mouth" by Amelia Kincade, as the best book on animal communication I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nature speaks to you through animal sightings.
I received this book as a gift after a red tailed hawk made a visit to me every day for a week.In this book, according to Native American traditions, animals relate to us because everything in the earth is connected. There are messages being sent to us by these sightings.A fox runs out across the road (and hopefully, you miss it) not once, but three times?Red tailed hawk sitting on a street light along the highway every day for a week? All of a sudden, a squirrel comes to your yard and does something that catches your attention that you never noticed before? All of that has a message to you and you alone.I recently purchased two of these books as gifts for my sisters. And, they have shared it with their friends who have had similar sightings.Sounds kookie, I know, but it actually will make sense to you when the message is meant for you. ... An exceptional book on the subject. It is comprehensive but I would not say not complete as no book on this subject could be. Still I believe this book to be the best work compiled in book form. Described by many as "the Bible" on the subject it indeed may be but it is not dogmatic as it offers several options and methods and leaves it for the aquarist to use.

    Editorial Review

You probably enjoy eating codfish, but reading about them? Mark Kurlansky has written a fabulous book--well worth your time--about a fish that probably has mattered more in human history than any other. The cod helped inspire the discovery and exploration of North America. It had a profound impact upon the economic development of New England and eastern Canada from the earliest times. Today, however, overfishing is a constant threat. Kurlansky sprinkles his well-written and occasionally humorous history with interesting asides on the possible origin of the word codpiece and dozens of fish recipes.Sometimes a book on an offbeat or neglected subject really makes the grade. This is one of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cod, who would have thunk it?
This book was utterly full of suprises.Man, how one little fish has altered and played a role in so much political and economic attitudes towards the sea and its treasures. The book also stands as a cautionary tale of what can happen when a natural resource such as cod are recklessly exploited to the point of having the inability to recover their numbers. As a marine biology teacher I was faascinated with this book and plan on having my classes read it to see how the ocean world affects life on land.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real keeper!!
I just finished reading a borrowed autographed copy of Kurlansky's Cod and decided that this is a book that I must have in my shelf to read it over again. I like fish and I like history. This book has the perfect match to gain my favor. I purchased my own copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool
This book is a wonderful tool for anyone that wishes to learn the anatomy of a horse. I use it with my animal massage and animal communication clients to better show exactly where on the horse they have an issue. It is nice for those people that do not want to see the anatomy of a cadaver animal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning tool!
I am an instructor/trainer and this book is wonderful for informing students how the horses body is put together and why some horses move differently than others. It also gives the student a chance to see the inside workings of the horse so that they better understand the vet and farrier when they have to explain what is wrong with the horse and treatment options. This book would also benefit anyone who wants to know more about the horse's anatomy. Not to mention it is fun to color!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Muscle Sketches
I wish that I had this book last year. I did a muscle and joint force project for which I needed detailed muscle diagrams of the horse's hindquarters. When I needed the illustrations, of course, I could not find any that had the appropriate level of detail (not online, through videos, books, etc). For this reason when I recently saw this book it. I would strongly recommend that any other rider or person with a starting interest in horse healthcare do the same. This is an excellent addition to a equine reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
This book contains some of the most spectacular photographs I have ever seen. There are amazing close-ups of reptiles, amphibians, and insects, aerial views of Africa, and stirring photos of mammals. A few photos are disturbing to see, such as the look of a terrified baby monkey clinging on to its mother shot dead by a hunter. Each photo is printed FULL size on thick quality semi-glossy paper on a single side, so if you wanted to, you could cut out certain photos and put it in a frame. Best of all, the author mentions that "The proceeds from the sales of this book go to fund conservation efforts in Africa".

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Book
This book is amazing, in its presentation and its content. The photography is first rate for an expedition of which pictures were not their main objective. The journal entries in the second book of the set will make you feel as if you are part of the trip especially if you have been to Africa before. I highly recommend this book as a coffee table piece or as a fascinating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond words
This book is an absolute masterpiece. One of the best of our times. Dr. Faye's journey itself was incredible. His mission or obsession to save the central African is relentless. This book is a tribute to him, Nick Nicols, whose photography surpasses anyone's both in quality and purpose, and to the deepest, darkest Africa.

3-0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 stars, because it is half a good book
When the author focuses on what she knows - autism, neurobiology, and domestic livestock - this book offers many insights. By applying some excellent existing research in neurobiology about what animals are truly capable of perceiving and feeling (read some of the referenced books for confirmation of emotions in animals) and applying her own experiences with domestic livestock and insights founded in her autism (a much more visual world than "normal" people (her word, not mine)), Dr. Grandin shows how a more visual, detail-oriented animal encounters the world.
1-0 out of 5 stars NO stars for this book!!
What a bunch of high school hallway gossip! The author does not know the difference between white and albino! The 'genetics' discussions on color (which includes people, chickens, horses, and dogs - all of it suspect) and mutts vs. purebred dogs are total claptrap! I confess, I couldn't get past page 87 when the author explains that 'one of the reasons wolves turned into dogs was that nursing human mothers probably adopted orphaned wolf cubs and nursed them at their breasts along with their human babies.' WHAT?? A waste of my hard-earned $. Having read those parts I cannot believe anything that went before or that follows, not that I'm reading any further. How is a multi-published author allowed to put such uneducated 'information' into print? And now she's influenced readers -- a terrible situation. Publisher, where are your pre-publication reviews? Shame on you for allowing this ignorant speculation to be published!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very, very interesting
This book was someone else's bookclub selection, and I think having no expectations when I picked it up really helped in my having that WOW experience that some folks report with this book and others miss. Yes, the prose needed much better editing: overuse of repetition, "stock" phrases, and "hanging" assertions that should have been cleaned up.However, I found the discussions of brain development/evolution, similarities between certain animal behaviors and human behaviors, development of language in different animals, and the coevolution of humans and dogs to be facinating (oops, just gave away the ending!).I found the side discussion of outcome-based audits interesting and enlightening.I also liked Dr. Temple's recommendation that people with autism be hired for baggage checking positions.Great idea! Although the book really goes all over the place, I found it a wonderful opportunity to engage my "seeking/hunting" motivation (you'll have to read the book for that one), and worth wading through the flaws to pick up the nuggets of gold. ... "How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about? Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor and shout: 'I want to hear one book more!'? DOES A DINOSAUR ROAR?" Most certainly not. Dinosaurs give their mommies and daddies big hugs and kisses, tuck their tales in, and whisper "Good night!"Read more

My son got this book and the matching stuffed dinosaur when he was 2. I think that was the start of his dinosaur obsession! :) We love this book and a year later we still read it all the time. He has the whole book memorized and can "read" it to us. We have started to acquire some of the other "How Do Dinosaur" books but this will probably always be the favorite. It's a great book!! We love the pictures and the story!!

5-0 out of 5 stars We Love It!
How could this book not recieve 5 stars? My first encounter I had with this book was at a daycare I worked at for the 2 year olds and they always requested it and loved it. Of course after reading it so many times it became memorized and they would help by shouting out words here and there. I loved it so much I made it a point to get it for my daughter and she has the same reaction. We read it every night and she knows the story, acting it out and recalling parts here and there. I got the paper back because it was cheaper but we'll be getting the hard back soon due to so much use. Definitely a title that should be included in your library.

My 3 year old son absolutely loves this book. We have to read it every night at bed time, he has it memorized for the most part so he "reads" along with me while I am reading it to him.

Well illustrated, informative, helpful, perfectly priced.I recomend this book to amateurs and veterans of this hobby, this is a beautiful book easily worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS ONE
I have been a rather serious birder for well over fifty years now and when I first saw this book (it was a gift) I almost felt insulted...back yard birder indeed!Well, I was wrong...I admit it.I have actually enjoyed this one far more that several of the many hundred or so more technical books on the subject that inhabit my shelves. This is a wonderful quick reference and is quite well organized.I have interested grandchildern and I not when they are here, which is almost daily, they reach for this volume far more than any of the others.Sharing my passion and hobby with them is great and this work is a wonderful help tool.Recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps the Average Birdwatcher
"The Audubon Backyard Birdwatcher: Birdfeeders and Bird Gardens" is for the interested, but average birdwatcher. However, it might just inspire the reader to take it a level higher.

3-0 out of 5 stars not a beginner book
This book goes indepth about the anatomy and physiology of mushrooms, soft corals and anemones. Not a great reference guide for choosing specimens for your It tends to generalize by family and/or genus vs species. If you are new to saltwater and are looking for a reference to choose items for your tank this would not be my first choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE reference for that field
Just like the vol. 1, that is a must-have book. Please note that the vol. 3 should be released late Nov. 2005.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the best vol.2
This volume of the series covers the soft corals and sea anemones; very important topics indeed for reef aquarium. The two books together are still not complete as there are many organisms found in a reef aquaria still not covered. In this series. A fine glossary accompanies this book. Much of what I had to gleen by trial and error and by reading arcane publications over the years is covered in this book. Approachable to the beginner yet a lot of substance for the expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best guide book on North American birds, PERIOD!
Ahh, the book with an identity problem. Is this a coffee table book or is this a field manual? It's far too small to be a coffee table book, yet far too large to be a practical field guide. I think Knopf (the publisher) tried to make it fulfill both roles so they decided to split the difference in sizes and in and so doing, they fulfilled neither role. Regardless, this book is astonishing to behold. It is as much a work of art as anything else. If you can have just one book on birds for the rest of your life, make it this one. I think the author said it took him something like 11 years just to carefully hand paint each of the bird illustrations in this book. Well it definitely shows! When this book was first released, it caused something of an uproar because it was way too large and heavy to carry with you out in the field. Yet, it was way too useful not to. I wrote the author telling him he should come out with a much smaller version of this guide that is more compact and lightweight for field use. Well, he listened to me because he did just that. My only complaint about this book (and the smaller version), is that the illustrations of the birds are just a wee bit smaller than what they should be. And with the target audience of this book being primarily baby boomers, this might not go over too well with their aging eyes. The somewhat smallish illustrations make it far too difficult to effectively identify many birds, especially birds of the sparrow family which are extremely tricky to visually seperate by their field markings. The author told me he did this for artistic reasons (to keep large areas of white page around the birds to visually seperate the illustrations). All fine and good, but you aren't trying to make an art book (at least I didn't think you were), you're trying to make something people can use out in the field (at least I thought you were). Still, this is by far the best identification book on North American birds availible and trust me, I've looked at them all. Go with the smaller version if you plan on carrying it with you out in the field. The large edition, though a bit small for a true coffee table book, will have to sufice in that role until Knopf finally decides to come out with a lager coffee table version of this book. Needless to say, I have them both and love them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sibley Guide
This is the best bird book of its kind on the market. While it is a little too large to be as handy as Peterson's for a field guide (unless you have very large pockets), it is indispensable for the serious birder. The convenience of having all of the information about a particular bird on one page cannot be overstated, and the illustrations are not only accurate but -- like Audubon's -- are works of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Birds of My Region
I am using this product as a study guide for a field elective class in college. It has supplied me with great pictures and information for almost every bird I have had to study so far.I love the quizzing feature the most.It has been the highest effective learning tool I've used with this DVD.
