5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favourites!
While this book is certainly not comprehensive (especially in regards to the rodents and bats), it has hundreds of crisp, clear photos. The descriptions for each species is brief, but there are still many interesting facts to learn from the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Mammal Enthusiasts
I highly recommend this book as a photo-encyclopedic guide to mammals for children, students and adults who have a general interest in mammals. My review for this book is based on its use as an educational reference guide, not as a guide that one would carry with them out in the field.(It might be suitable for that use, but I am not qualified to review it in that manner.)We use this guide with our son, and I have given it as a gift to children interested in mammals, after looking at all of the top mammal guides listed on Amazon and in Borders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modoc the Elephant and the Boy who Loved Her
Before there was Dumbo, before but not quite before there was Toomai of the Elephants, there was Modoc and there was Bram, the boy who loved her. Boy and elephant, born on the same day, in the same hour, two souls intertwined throughout a lifetime.
5-0 out of 5 stars Modoc: The True Story of the Greatest Elephant That Ever Lived
This is by far one of the best animal stories I have read. It is moving, heart-felt, entertaining, touching and funny all at once.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great book
I ordered 2 more copies of Modoc so I could pass it out to friends.I LOVED the book.It emcompassed the qualities that I hold most dear:love, compassion, commitment, loyalty, determination, understanding and perseverance. It engulfed for me - I couldn't put it down. And was glad no one was home as I finished it - I was sobbing. Many of my friends have read it - all liked it, only a few were as passionate as I was about the book.....but I would still highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Degrees of separation.
Desmond Morris has created an extremely provocative and challenging book that forces one to question "humanity's" everyday and all-time reactions and motivations. It challenges one to analyse and understand whether we are as intelligent as we think. This book is as valid today as it was when it was written 40 years ago.Our arrogance in seeing ourselves as being intelligent beings is exposed or at least called into question. The Naked Ape, used well, forces one to continually re-assess and measure society's and one's own behaviour.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Based on the cover illustration and the subtitle, you'd think that The Naked Ape is another book about human evolution. This is far from the truth. The Naked Ape is about man's current condition. It views people as just another animal.
4-0 out of 5 stars Naked As In Stripped Of Our Illusions Of Self
If human beings ever make contact with an intelligent species from beyond planet earth, then the observations those "people" might make about us would probably read quite a bit like the ones evolutionary zoologist Morris makes in this humorous but deadly serious study of the human animal. The very things we have come to see as mundane about ourselves are the very traits Morrison zeroes in on here. Very little escapes this careful study, although in some cases humanity might collectively wish it had. In this book the human species is anatomically, psychologically, sociologically and biologically cataloged and classified. We read a dispassionate critique of our mating habits, the ways in which we raise our young, our preferences for foods, for where we live, for how we interact with one another, and what bodily features are universally desired over others. In the end I was left both amazed and embarrassed to be among the membership in this great and crazed life form. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not find it that useful in E. Africa
The pictures are black and white drawings. We brought this and the Audubon Society Guide to African Wildlife (or something like that) and we much preferred the Audubon book.It was more compact, had a durable vinyl cover and had color pictures with quick facts on each animal - which is really what you want in the moment on a bumpy safari game drive.I would get the other book instead. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but so little about donkeys...
Received a signed copy (nice surprise!) of the book which I found to be well written, illustrated and quite complete, information-wise.The only comment I can make is that I thought that there would be more specific information on donkey training than there currently is.While the author's Little Jack Horner tends to prove that whatever a mule can do, so can a donkey, I wonder whether the training described for mules in this book is also applicable as is to donkeys.5-0 out of 5 stars Boy was I mistaken
I ordered the book....then read the reviews and wanted to cancel....I received it and am I glad....it is the greatest thing going for training donkeys! I own 2...I know.....those who did not like the book simply don't understand longears. And an added bonus was I got a signed by the author copy....thanks Meredith...Judy George......ADAMS member since 1990

3-0 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars - an update of a classic, but buyer beware
This is a wonderful reference. But when I got hold of this latest edition of the Rat Nervous System, I was surprised and very disappointed to find that the chapter on the amygdala was referencing figures in the 2nd edition, rather than reprinting them here. For me, it meant the trouble of getting both editions through interlibrary loan. But if I had bought this latest edition, for this price, I would have been very upset to find essential figures missing.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not good enough to cost this much!!!
Consider the following: if you buy four copies of this book you will have spent ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. It better be high quality: great editing, beatiful figures, great writing, great references.
5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book I know

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
Good book, useful, and essential for students and scientists interested to work with mammals.

5-0 out of 5 stars a mammalogist bible
without doubt Wilson and Reeder's book is THE source of information for people looking for mammals in museums and old scientific publications. the superb listing of synonyms, the listings of the scientist describing the clades, and the brief biogeographic notes makes this book invaluable for people having any taxonomic question. The main attitude seems to be one of splitters, giving a lot of specific names to various populations others consider a single species, the biogeography can be a little more detailed, but there is no other source with that thoroughness and completeness in mammalian taxonomy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating Photographic Essay of Orphaned African Elephants
Photographer Gerry Ellis spent 2 years with the orphaned elephants of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust at the Nairobi National Park in Kenya in order to document the rescues, daily lives and preparation to return to the wild for these young elephants who have fallen victim to natural and unnatural disasters. In the summer of 1999, prolonged drought and increased ivory poaching brought brought more orphaned baby elephants to the Trust in one season that it had seen in the entire previous decade. Gerry Ellis followed, photographed, and got to know 8 of the young elephants who were one month to one year old when they arrived at the Wildlife Trust. Through more than 100 photographs and accompanying text, we meet the "Orphan 8", learn of the challenges of raising them, observe as the youngsters recover from their injuries and fear, adjust to life at the Trust, develop relationships with one another and with their human keepers, and, after 2 years, move to Tsavo National Park, where they will eventually be released into the wild. An essay by Gerry Ellis introduces each of the book's 6 chapters. Detailed explanations accompany all photographs -not as captions, but full-sized text. I've long been a fan of Gerry Ellis' fine art nature photography, but "Wild Orphans" is fantastic photojournalism and more personal work than I have seen from Ellis before. Ellis' love for this project shows. Admirers of elephants and those concerned with their fate -or that of African wildlife in general- won't want to miss "Wild Orphans".

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK
I love this book. The text was written by the photographer. The photographs alone are priceless.I think it is also a very valuable contribution to the ongoing oftentimes contentious debate about human intervention in the animal kingdom. This book makes an eloquent statement that there are times when it is appropriate to intervene, save the lives of the animals and educate humans on the importance of maintaining animal habitat in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy book
As a physical anthropology grad student, I am finding this book to be very useful. The hardcover text is great, but this is transportable and packed with information. Would highly recommend it to anyone in forensics, anthropology.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Human Bone Manual
this book would be best accompanied by an anatomy book.To really get a good visual, it's a good idea to review muscle attachments and origin sites in a(n additional) book with color.so My biggest criticism (and it's so easy to criticize) is that while many of the bones are pictured the as the actual size, there are not photographs of the bones articulated with neighboring bones.I found it hard to side bones because of this. So, it's a pretty good book in spite of my harshness, just not by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide.

Mr. Thomas deserves credit for researching and providing essential information for the cattleman who is serious about improving the efficiency of his operation.I have recently purchased and read several books on the subject, and while this is an older book, Beef Cattle Production:An Integrated Approach is head and shoulders above the others for reference material covering a broad spectrum of subjects. From sire and dam selection, disease control, reproduction of purebred, cross-bred and commercial cattle, to ranch layout, operational issues, financing tips and equipment concerns this book hits on them all.NOT for casual observers - its for the cattleman.
