5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
I used this book in my General Chem I class a couple of years back and have since used it as a resource for my organic, biochem classes and MCAT review. The book was very easy to read compared to others and the examples were straight forward and easy to follow. The authors also attempted to include scientific/medical relevance to some of the issues covered. The most difficult chapter in the book to read is quantum theory; however, this topic is typically difficult for anyone to understand at first.
4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
This book has been a big help to me as a reference source to fall back on. especially the CD that came with it. This book covers everything from thermo chemistry to organic chemistry. The website is somewhat insightful as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not at all for beginners
I am currently taking an AP chemistry class, and we use this book. The class is meant to be extremely difficult, accelarated, and in-depth.We cover 22 out of the 25 chapters; we do not do modern materials, chemistry of the environment, or coordination compounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning update of a classic
When I went to update this with my handwritten notes made on the second edition I found that the material had already been added.Much improved over the older edition with more information on alternate species, constituents, pao zhi and modern uses.It still has the annoying multiple indexes but at least they are thumb indexed. Well worth the investment for owners of earlier editions who actively use herbal medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important, but flawed?
My copy of this book is full of printing errors, including chapter summaries that are incomplete and index page numbers that are as many as two pages off.I expect much more from Eastland Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chinese medicinal products bible - required reading
At last, Bensky et al. third edition is finally out and what a vast source of knowledge it is. For anyone using Chinese medicinal products, this really is your bible. Massively expanded from the 2nd edition, there are hundreds more many medicinal products included.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and understandable introduction to chemistry
While most of the one year chemistry texts cover more or less the same principles, the order varies, the illustrations are similar, but they vary most in the way they explain the material. It is in the vocabulary they use and develop that helps the student develop the intuitions, understanding, and skills the authors are after. This is a very well written text that is useful for non-chemistry majors as well as science students needing an introductory course in chemistry.
4-0 out of 5 stars solid text, no overall change from previous edition
I wrote the review below for the previous edition (9), and having seen the tenth edition, most of my subjects of complaints and praises pretty much remain the same.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for IB students
The textbook delivers great diagrams, good for virtual learners. Fancy words are rarely used. It also corresponds well with the IB Chemistry syllabus. If you are thinking about ordering Chemistry textbook, and if you are an international student who are not so strong at English, this textbook is good to go.

4-0 out of 5 stars book condition good
This book is in very good shape. It is a paper back version but the contents are exactly the same as a hardback version. The pages and chapters are the same. The cover of the book has slightly curled edges due to it being used. Other than that, the book is in good condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Story with Chemistry and Silberberg

5-0 out of 5 stars good!
This was a very good book for coursework, especially since the syllabus from BOD wasn't that good. For the boards, I just skimmed this book, particularly paying attention to the end of chapter summaries...I read through first aid biochem, and any topic I felt was hard to grasp i would re-read it in lippincotts. recommend this for boards when studying pathways... rememeber only study and read about pathways that are represented in first aid...and pay attention to rate limiting reactions!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars LWW Illustrated Biochem
An excellent book for coursework in both undergrad and first year medschool, plus the tie-in with LWW Illus. Pharm. is a great duet. Our first year biochem was horribly taught, this book helped immensely, and look forward to using it for quick reference review in year 2 and Board study.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT review
I am now a believer.I was skeptical about purchasing the review series, but I used it to study for comps, and I was amazed at how easy I was able to get through the material. The summaries are exceptional and as a biochemist, it served as wonderful starting point, pointing out critical processes- and giving a "big picture" framework-- which made learning the details far easier.I highly recommend the text. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre, at best
So what if UCLA uses this as their primary freshman text? UCSD (where I go), MIT, and other schools use it too, and every student I've met agrees that this book is sub-par. It isn't as clear as it can be, is bereft of example problems that apply to the homework, has at least a few mistakes per chapter in the solutions manual, spends way too much time deriving some (useless) things more applicable to physical chemisty, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I got the order sooner than i expected and it was in exactly the condition they said it was in.I am very pleased with my order.

3-0 out of 5 stars Confusion
Book layout is overly confusing. Text is sometimes not as clear as can be and needs more practice examples (most apparent in sections like isomers and titrations). Yes like one person said before, UCLA does use this text to teach Life science majors, but there are better choices. There are numerous mistakes in the solution guides still, and Zumdahl's "Chemical Principles" is a much better read in my opinion. I actually used it to clear up points this text was muddy on. Your mileage may vary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's amazing what reading a good textbook actually feels like!
Let's be blunt: most science textbooks, especially at the introductory level, are terrible these days. They're filled with fluff, poorly formatted, have examples that don't explain the exercises at all (I shake my fist menacingly at Tipler), and above all, just don't teach the material very well. It's clear the authors understand it (usually), but it's also clear they just don't get how to convey it people who... well... don't.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I thourougly enjoyed the book, however I would have liked twice as many worked example exercises in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
This book explains basic chemistry concepts very well. The chapter on entropy is great. The sequence of the topics covered is generally traditional. I like the idea that the chapter on solutions is placed after the basic concept of equilibrium is covered. Some organic chemistry is integrated into the text. I personally believe that the concepts of acid and base should be extended a little to prepare students for organic chemistry. This book has more pages (~1200 pages) than most other general chemistry textbook available (~1000 pages). I wish the publisher could have it available in two volumes so that it is easier for students to carry around and read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!!! Chemistry Made Easy!!!
This is the most comprehensive lecture book published.Considering this is a college level text, it is very easy to understand - easy enough for high school students. The authors ease their way, not jump around, into every topic. Also, all examples (including mathematical expressions and equations) are explained in easy, step-by-step format.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good when compare to Chang's Chemistry book
This book made me confuse. Not clearly written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written, richly illustrated, and well organized text for a one year general chemistry course (or self study)
This is an interesting text for a one year general chemistry course. While all general chemistry texts form major publishers have some convergence so they all cover similar basic material, they all have different organizing ideas. What I enjoyed about this text is that it has a clear organizing principle: the periodic table of elements.
2-0 out of 5 stars it s not the best and certainly not even good. just bit below average
I have read 2 other chem book and found this book is my least favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BOOK
I have read and used many books on organic chemistry, both on my BS and graduate degree programs. This book has been the best ever written on the subject. The authors have treated the subject to its simplest detail to be understood by everyone. Now that I am a practicing chemist, I always look at this book as a reference. The presentation is very good and the way the chapters are organized is very neat and arranged. The topic on synthesis in action and retrosynthetic analysis is very interesting. What I find very nice are the topics on the application of the chemical principles on real life synthesis. The information are all up to date. Stuart Warren and his co authors has gone a long way and their expertise is shown in this wonderful book. Warren has been one of myfavorite chenistry authors way back to his simple books on chemical synthesis and retrosynthetic analysis. I recommend this book, not only to students, both on their undergraduate and graduate programs but also to practicing chemist and chemical engineers and all those who love and find the field of chemistry a very interesting subject and those who wants to find chemical knowledge at a glance. Truly, this is a one volume Encyclopedia on Organic Chemistry.

I purchased a used Chemistry textbook that is in near perfect condition. This book looked virtually brand new and was purchased at a great price.

3-0 out of 5 stars My advice, get a separate book to supplement
As one reviewer said, the book is trying to be simple. Some of the examples are so simple that they don't even test you're learning. And the more challenging examples seem to come out of nowhere. Also theorganization is slightly convoluted and a little hard to follow with a fullunderstanding.I recommend attaining another chem book to supplement thisone if you must get this for a class.I personally found this book to beso confusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book so much I am buying copies for my students!
I have been a college student and subsequently a teacher of chemistry for a number of years now and this is the first book that has really impressed me enough so that I want to continue teaching from it for years to come.I think the writing is clear and at the appropriate level for junior college students in a general introductory course. We only cover the first 11 chapters in our quarter, but the content, problems, and photography are superb.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read before you take chemistry 101.
I bought this book as a supplement to my Chemistry 101 textbook.I was really looking for a more complete explanation of electron configuration, which I didn't find this book to be that helpful with.Overall, I thought this book helped to reinforce some of the basic concepts, but didn't really have much of an impact on my grade.I would recommend this book to someone who wants an overview of chemistry before taking the course or to someone who needs to brush up on basic chemistry before taking a more advanced course. It can also be helpful if you're having trouble with a particular topic.I did enjoy the supplemental information in the book having to do with chemistry of everyday life.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Dummy would ever take Chemistry
One thing I always enjoyed about the "for Dummies" series is the sense of humor and real realism in them. This book does an OK job, and is written by a Professor who understands what students struggle with and tries to make it as simple as possible. But Chemistry is a very complex and vast subject, no one book could contain every aspect of it. This book should be seen as a review or a brush up on chemistry, it by no means covers all the topics you will take in a Inorganic Chemistry class, especially the farther you go into the semester. The fact is most people who will be using this book are those students entering into Inorganic Chemistry, or General Chemistry. I do feel he could devote a few of the chapters to topics that will discussed in most Inorganic chemistry textbooks instead of such things as Organic Chemistry, which is a subject unto itself, air pollution, water pollution, and chemistry in the home for example. All relevant topics, but not really going to help you get a passing grade on a test. This is a supplement to your textbook that I feel is well worth spending a few bucks on and using it to your advantage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to chemistry!
This book is an excellent introduction to chemistry. If all 'for dummies' books are as good as this one, I will certainly buy more of them. I have a background in natural sciences myself (master's degree in mathematics), but I never studied chemistry at the university (or in high school for that matter). Given this background, I was afraid that a 'for dummies' book would be too dumbed down. I was happy to learn that this is not the case. I was surprised at the degree of understanding I got from this book. You actually learn how electrons take part in reactions (valence numbers and all that), and how to do simple calculations. This means that you learn enough theory to predict to a certain extent what will happen in a reaction. In addition there are lots of real life examples, with chapters on organic chemistry, pollution, chemistry in the home, and so on. This book is not meant to replace a university text book of course, but I doubt if you learn more theory than this in a high school course in chemistry. Actually I would think you learn less in a high school course, since I think some of the topics would be difficult for high school students. But of course you learn to do a few experiments in high school, which this book could never teach you (it would probably be irresponsible to try this in self-study book). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS AN INVESTMENT
i do not usually go crazy for the cracking the AP series but this one is by far the gold standard. Covers all the material concisely, relevant problems, very user friendly. If you are committed enough to take the AP Chem give yourself the best possible advantage and get this book. I did not find one error which is incredibly rare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best AP Chem review book available!
I owned or perused several different review books for the AP Chemistry Exam, but this was certainly the best. I've never seen an AP book as perfectly on-target as this one. Certain books (like Barron's AP Chem) contain too much information where it actually impedes your preparation, whereas others contain too little (which Princeton Review sometimes tends to do). But this book gets the combination just right. It reviews ALL of the necessary facts and concepts you need to know, and excludes everything you don't need to know. Trust me when I say that this book is on the money. And oh, I got a 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book = key to getting a 5 on the AP test
I am very pleased with this book. Although there are a few typos, it gets the point out very effectively. 1-0 out of 5 stars It deserves 0 - if not negative stars
Note: I'm 18. I am using this book for my Chemistry class at Berkeley and I must say that this is a terrible book. It makes no sense and the problems in the back are very difficult because reading the book will not help you answer them. The book does cover a lot, however, because I cannot find a reference book to help me understand this book that covers the same material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great chemistry textbook for college freshmen
Though many people would find this book distasteful, it is an extremely good source of information for both basic and intermediate chemistry. It is obviously not a book any student can handle, but with a good background in basic chemistry, the book will take the student a long way down the path of chemistry. The book uses colorful pictures and graphs to show the reader what the chemistry looks like in real life rather than just teaching the bare concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Someone Knows How to Explain Chemistry!
I thought my brain was broken because I tried several times to understand Chemistry. The problem was the other textbooks required by my professors. When I came across Chang's book, I thought it would be written like the rest of the boring chemistry texts written for people starting out in chemistry (but seemed like they were for people with a Ph.D. in chemistry). After I started to read Chang's book I was surprised, but I doubted myself.I assumed that I would get concepts mixed up or that I did not understand them at all.I was wrong because I passed every test in my Chemistry class.I am so happy to have found this book.I recommend this book to every college student that is somewhat familar with chemistry. This book helped me pass! Now, it would be great if he wrote organic chemistry and biochemistry books also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
Chemistry is the black science; it came to humanity borne upon the river Hades. In other words, I am an unrepentant chemistry hater. That being said, I nevertheless require a good grade in the subject in order to advance to the next stage of my studies in a field completely unrelated to chemistry (sound familiar my friends? and isn't it time we did something about it?). This text is bottomlessly horrible, plain and simple; its educational value dissipates as quickly as a stream of intestinal gas directed against the wind. There were times during which I fell down on both knees and begged God for deliverance (prior to chemistry, I was an agnostic) from the burden of another day in chemistry class with this hated tome around my neck like a millstone. In short: I've seen a wealth of better textbooks on the market since my sad days in chem 120, and I would encourage you to search for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The long wait is over...
Phys. Org. Chem. has always been one of my favourite subjects. As I graduated from school and college into university for my master's, I began to realise that it represents not so much a separate topic as a philosophy and approach; to treat chemical and biological systems from the perspective of structure, conformation, and reactivity, which are after all the most fundamental aspects of any such system. I reached the conclusion that phys org chem is a truly interdisciplinary framework, and any one who has a solid background in it can be a good computational chemist, synthetic organic chemist, and/or bioorganic/biochemist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, no more "Lousy and Ridiculous" for chemistry graduate students
As a recent grad of an org chem graduate program who had to suffer through the nearly 20 year old text "Mechanism and Theory in Organic Chemistry" by Lowry and Richardson, this book by Anslyn and Dougherty is a fabulous update that is easy to read and great asset to any chemistry student.I agree with the other reviewers that the problem sets are challenging, the text is clearly written, and the material relates well back to current research issues. If you are a graduate student considering getting another reference to help you through your organic chemistry graduate program, get this book before you try "Advanced Organic Chemistry: Structure and Mechanisms" by Carey and Sundberg. I expect that "Modern Physcial Organic Chemistry" will become a staple to most chemist's shelves similar to that of a CRC Handbook or "Advanced Organic Chemistry" by March.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have for graduate students
For a text book this is very easy to read, and the explinations are both original and helpful. It also covers all of the topics and more in physical organic chemitry a must have for organic graduate students. ... Read more
