5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and organized textbook
This was my textbook for Biology 101 & 102. This book was a pleasure to read. It is clearly written and not dry at all so it was easy to keep focus. Even in my upper level classes, I find myself referring back to it occasionally and am still impressed by it. An important point I would like to make is that, if you are using this as a course textbook, the CD is invaluable. The animated tutorials and chapter quizzes, (which are quite thorough), kept me one step ahead. That CD shaved hours off of my study time for each test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive
Actually found this one in my storage boxes and dusted it off for a look see. Holds up against contemporary text in classes now. When it says buy used from like $2, that's a helluva deal. For a science book over 10 years old, it still does a bang up job on subject of genes, ecology, mechanisms of evolution....the chapter on biological diversity is almost complete enough to be a zoology text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Long, dense, and at first look tedious - but absolutely worth it.
This book was used in my AP Bio class, where my teacher's constant reminders to "read the book" usually went unnoticed. This isn't because Campbell's book is necessarily boring or difficult to understand; in fact, the situation is quite the opposite. Campbell delves into the concepts of biology with more than adequate depth and breadth for the subject, offering both the basics and the details necessary to survive AP Bio (and, from the way my AP Exam went, college freshman Bio, too).

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliance and Ignorance Together For One Very High Price
This is by far the best that Campbell & Co. have produced. The text reads easily and with great clarity. The difference of this 7th edition over previous editions is significant, and nearly worth the price. However, paying nearly $150 for a text is ridiculous. The publishers obviously think they can command such a premium because this text is so closely linked with the current American public high school's Biology Advanced Placement test.In short, they feel they have taxpayers over a barrel on this and can 'get away with it'.Shameful.Also, Campbell and Reece are radical evolutionists.Do not expect balance or 'both sides of the argument' presented on any of the more controversial aspects of Darwin's theory. There is no debate as far as they are concerned.Though 'spontaneous generation' was disproven by Louis Pasteur and Francisco Redi over 150 years ago, Campbell and Reece cling to this notion with strange, obsessive passion that borders on the bizarre.Their arrogance on this important issue strongly detracts from what is an outstanding, and otherwise balanced resourse. Why not address some contrary points of view to Darwinian evolution and even (gasp!) admit many of the more infamous errors by overly enthusiastic biologists in the past (e.g. the "Nebraska Man" of the Scopes Monkey Trial was actually only two teeth; the "Piltdown Man" was a hoax that was taught as fact in American universities for nearly 40 years, etc...).Such arrogance quickly leads to blindness, and has no place in real science. But, in spite of these confusing departures from real science (science being that which is both observable and testable), the text has some outstanding qualities that make it one of the premier sources in the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Expensive, Thorough,& Biased
This certainly is the definitive word for biology students. The 7th edition reads faster, with more clarity and interest, than the previous edition by far.Does this warrant the outrageous price ?Doubtful, but since public schools (i.e taxpayers) are footing the bill for the most part, the publishers do this with relative impunity. This latest edition has stunning photos and graphics, and these add greatly to the text's readability. The chapters are short and concise, and the review questions and self-test items are excellent. The CD Rom that accompanies the text is also excellent and highly recommended. The optional study guide is not however, as it has a thoroughly mediocre quality and superfluous nature.Of even greater offense is the "pay per view" website that is offered for additional resources. After paying $100 for a text, and then be expected to pay more for Web assistance is unabashedly mercenary. However the objective reader will find Campbell & Reece's greatest flaw in its blatant bias concerning the theory of evolution. The 'theory' is not treated as such, but as an obvious fact, with no contrary points of view to any of the controverisal aspects of the theory included whatsoever. This is no small matter.Campbell and Reece simply assume that the spontaneous generation of life indeed occurred at some time in the Earth's past (though this has never been demonstrated experimentally--ever) and that DNA and RNA rose via the random chance of fortuitous collisions of molecules over time, (again, with no experimental evidence to justify these claims), the serious reader must earnestly question why the theory is presented in each chapter with an almost obsessive fervor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, mercenary publisher -- caveat emptor
This is a lovely textbook. It is very up-to-date and well organized. It ihas full-color printing throughout the text and great self-assessment questions. The CD-ROM (included) also has many helpful resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy reference
I didn't have this book during my P3 (3rd year of PharmD school) year; we used the text by Kradjan that had a patient-based format. DePiro's more traditional format makes it easier to find info quickly. The downloadable format of this text (which comes with the book) makes it even faster to find info. A downside would be books like these are out-of-date as soon as they're published, but I've been using the DePiro just fine for my P4 clerkships and plan to use Kradjan's as a doorstop. (I'm not really a kid)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for a great price
I received my order fairly quickly and the book was great. I would definately order from them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard by Which Others are Compared
It's difficult to write a review of this book because most of the people who are even thinking of buying it have probably used it already. They have seen it in the library, their professors have shown it to them, or it is required for the course they are taking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing photography -- no narrative -- great coffee table book
As other reviewers have said, the photography is top notch.I will focus my review on the difference between this book and his "classic", A Child Is Born. When I was deciding on my purchase I did not know which book would be better for my purposes, so I hope to shed some light on that for others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images of the human lifespan
Lennart Nilsson took the first image of a living human embryo in the 1960s and stunned the world. Now, Life is an absolutely amazing book of images documenting human life from DNA through fetal development and birth. The second half of the book focuses on the human body, it's organs, tissues the things that eventually threaten life - bacteria and viruses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant photography...
The photography in this book is proof positive of the miraculousness of life and the beginning of a human soul.I heartily recommend this book for a deeper look at the creation of a baby and its subsequent growth. ... Read more

    3-0 out of 5 stars Doctor's Jokes Don't Work
Yes, I understand that Doctors believe the human body is SO complex that they feel they have to add little elves, sex jokes, and personal, inside humor to make the book readable; However, you can do basic education and keep people reading by not mystifying.I personally took offense at some of the body labels and the condescending way this book approaches the body. I've read several books similar to this, all in an effort to keep my 65 year old body young, and to protect my children from disease.I found Rayna Gangi's Book, and Andrew Weil's books to be much more respectful, and hence, more informative and readable. These guys are capitalizing on the YOU premise, and obviously laughing and joking all the way to the bank.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could personally thank the authors
I also bought the RealAge makeover book.I highly recommend that if you enjoyed this book.It has even more details, IMO.I am following the workout plan in that book and have been for the last 48 days.I feel fantastic.I also got my multivitamins based on their recommendations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Yes - Basic - But Thats What The General Population Still Needs
As a Fitness Pro and Lifestyle Consultant - it is clear the general population still lacks knowledge of the basics. While a good number of reviews state this book is not a good one because it only covers the basics - I disagree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pollan is my hero!
I am a pharmacist who is also very interested in how diet and exercise maintain people's health.Michael Pollan's book was an incredible eye-opener.I first heard him interviewed on Science Friday on NPR news (podcast) and decided to read his book.It is an extremely well researched book with an entire source list in the back.It is also very entertaining and easy to read.It is obvious he has a great sense of humor. His book encompasses the economics, politics, biology, ecology, and physiology regarding our current american diet. His book has surely changed the way I think about food and I was fairly well versed before I read his book. Now, I am a member of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and have been spreading the word! This is one of the best and most influential books I have ever read. Everyone should read it.Ignorance is not bliss.Just ask some of my pharmacy customers who have side effects from the medicines they take and have to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on those same medications.

5-0 out of 5 stars My response to Vegan/Vegetarian horn-tutors
I'm about halfway through this book (I've been kind of skipping around to various parts--which is how I usually read non-fiction books). Modern agriculture, factory farming, and where our food comes from are all subjects near and dear to my heart. These are topics that only people in the industry or professionally trained chefs (which I am) usually know and care about. I don't think veganism/vegetarianism is a good response (and I don't think it will fix anything). Instead, we need to be voicing our displeasure with our dollars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for the Health Conscious
The Omnivore's Dilemma is an exploration into the foods that are on our plates and why. The answers he delivers are at times frightening.

5-0 out of 5 stars great reference of psychiatric illnesses
I think this book will be a pretty good resource for anyone searching for information regarding sleep disorders and mood swings. It will also teach anyone new to psychiatrics valuable information on dementia, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc. as well as diagnoses associated with the illnesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars The closest thing to Diagnostic Guidelines in Psychiatry
This is the full manual that you need to at least be in the ballpark on a diagnosis to help treat your patients with reasonable certainty. With Diagnosis, there is prognosis...and with this book, you can give a patient some relatively confident answers about what they are experiencing. One disadvantage to this full text is that it is large, and there is a lot of verbage. The scaled down desk version or the pocket guide to the DSM IV that you may want to have on rounds.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still "The" Text We All Know About
DSM will remain as the bible of psychiatry. Despite its shortcomings, DSM has made it possible for clinicians to talk more objectively about psychiatric illnesses. Now more than ever, people around the globe can actually understand what 'schizophrenia' or 'bipolar disorder' really is. So if you're a trainee or a practising clinician, devour it, master it, enjoy it, and use it. But don't take the criteria too literally. Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Reference in the Electrician's Trade
I can't say it better myself:"The purpose of this Code is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity" NEC 90.1(A)
5-0 out of 5 stars Required reference for handymen and professional electricians
The National Electric Code, also knows as NFPA-70, is the standard that building officials use to define what is legal to use in electric services of all kinds.NFPA is the National Fire Protection Association. The Electric Code began almost as soon as Edison wired some of his new lights in New York, and the first electricity caused fire happened.Soon thereafter the National Fire Protection Association began writing safety codes aimed at preventing fires and promoting safe wiring techniques.Today, more than a century later, the Electric Code is republished every 3 years. As new inventions and new applications for electricity are ever expanding the code book expands and is revised to define the new applications. The 2005 edition has been updated to include recent developments in available materials and equipment. The code has 772 large pages detailing every electric installation from common house wiring to installation requirements for 35,000 volt transformers. The tables detailing how many conductors you can put in a conduit go on for 50 pages in the appendix.

5-0 out of 5 stars hands down, this behemoth deserves 5 stars
Yes, 1616 pages and 2 inches thick of madness can be intimidating, but this book is sheer awesomeness in lots of ways. Whether you are self-taught, actually taking the class, or just want a desk reference for cell bio, this is definitely the one to get.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Canonical Work
This is a beautifully written textbook that presents the canonical version of what is currently known about cellular biology at the molecular level. The illustrations are clear and the text is easy to follow. The only shortcoming of the book is that, necessarily, it stays above the messy details in order to maintain clarity. The result, inevitably, is that some areas are glossed over (transcription activation is one example, but there are many others) and some areas appear to be understood when in reality there is a great deal of disagreement (for example, gene splicing). But these omissions are appropriate because the intention of the book is to provide an overview, not a specialist in-depth examination of every topic. This is a great primer for college students or educated people wanting to know just a little more detail about how life works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply love it---a plethora of information
This book is a wonderful source of knowledge for anyone who is interested in cell biology; or if you are studying it--like myself.I give a 100% gaurantee that if you purchase this book you will be satisfied. I just finished reading the chapter on pathogens; wow so much information - it's truly ubelievable. That is what else I love about this book: it can be read sectionally. All one has to do is read the first three chapters to establish a foundation of the basic knowledge; you can skip that step all together if you know your stuff. Simply put: buy this book. Also, I forgot to mention that it includes a beautifully designed CD-ROM; it has animations that suppliment what you learned and more--not your average CD extra. The reason this review is so short and concise is because the other one I wrote didn't get saved--that was the long one with detail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful message
Congratulations to Al Gore for taking on a subject largely regarded as anathema by the US political establishment. Yes the science is still unsure on many of the issues, however, it IS becoming increasingly apparent that C02 emissions from industry, petrol engines etc are contributing to driving global temperatures upwards. That said, there is truth though that global warming is a natural event because thanks to analysis carried out on ice samples from the Greenland permafrost, thousands of years old, we have a clear record of many natural warming cycles going back millennia.
1-0 out of 5 stars What was Gore's degree in? Oh yeah, journalism
Oh please... what scientific background does this guy have???? What a joke! The stuff in this book is more sophmoric than a prom. This is a political treatise with no scientific value at all. What is my degree in?Well, I have 3: BS chemistry, MS environmental science and a JD (Law).

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic and Practical
This is one of the best "how to" books on management I have read in years. It captures the culture of hospitals (and health care facilities in general) very accurately and the realism lends credibility to the book. He gives authentic scenarios and tells how he and his managers dealt with them. Also, he is realistic in that he includes some tough remedies such as helping someone find opportunities outside the organization when she absolutely poisoned her departmental relationships and refused to change. If you are wanting to change the culture in your organization this book will certainly help you and give you a different perspective. And, although it will be most helpful to health care managers, it will also be applicable to managers in any setting that want to change their culture and become a better, more productive, and more satisfying place to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially useful for healthcare upper management
Quint's book was recommended by a fellow manager and I have been very pleased with his ideas.Although geared to upper management (some of his ideas work best with an organization-wide implementation) there are several things I plan to implement right away.It is difficult to find management titles so well tailored to the healthcare community; this one fits the bill nicely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative
What is easier to find than the bone your dog buried in the back yard? The answer is something to like in this new dog book by Dr. Becker and Gina Spadafori. After collecting a set of questions from observant dog owners, Dr. Becker and Ms. Spadafori turned to the experts for up to date answers about canine medicine and behavior, explained with common sense and humor. In addition to a great set of questions and answers, this book is sprinkled with some enjoyable essays about dogs.My favorite, by Ms. Spadafori, is called "Quit Picking On Poodles," (as a child, my two best four-legged friends were a pair of poodles our family had as pets and one couldn't ask for more intelligent and loving companions, so I have always thought they were unnecessarily maligned and I was glad to read her essay to that effect.) A fun and readable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Patients and Dentists
I am a third year dental student at the University of Southern California and this book is a great resource for me.It has a very straight forward no nonsense approach that simplifies all the information out there about cosmetic dental procedures.I found the cases to be very interesting and informative plus I can use the information to help educate the patients I see about what options they have. With all the mixed messages out there about cosmetic dentistry it is great to have a resource that is so straightforward and helpful.Plus the price, are you kidding me?!?What a bargain! And the proceeds go to charity, if you are a dentist or a potential patient at all interested in cosmetic procedures then there is no reason not to buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book - For Lawyers???
I work in law not medicine.I bought Taber's because of the many personal injury cases with which I was involved.People talk about legal language - nothing compares to medical terminology.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great staple for anyone in the medical field
Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary is all encompassing, defining the simplest to the most complex terms. To be honest, however, I rarely even open it because it came with access to their website for a 6 mo trial. Since I do most of my work (I'm still in school) on the computer, it's much easier for me to run a search than go get the book. Potential buyers: this is more of a "dictionary" than encyclopedia. You're not going to get long explanations but short definitions, otherwise it would be volumes and volumes long. One more thing: it's a very pretty book - well bound; having it on your book shelf makes you look like you actually might know what you're doing!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More Fact, Less Opinion Please
There are many areas of this book where this brilliant scientist documents science correctly and accurately, but unfortunately Dr. Collins also tries to pass off a lot of erroneous opinions as fact. Some specific examples follow. 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
I have thouroughly enjoyed this book, although i could not give it past three stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Fundamentalists and Atheists
This gentle, well reasoned and insightful book should be required reading for all fundamentalists and atheists.I'm a Christian and since I hit my first biology class at age 13 I've wondered how to explain to all the folks in my denomination that they were wrong about evolution and that denying evolution was really a slap in the face of God, denying one of His most amazing acts because they don't like those nasty evolutionists. To believers he says, "The consequence (of being anti-evolution) can bring ridicule on the church, driving sincere seekers away from God instead of into His arms."On the other hand, those nasty evolutionists ought to read it as well.To them Dr. Collins says, "Keep in mind that the pure water of spiritual truth is carried in those rusty containers called human beings, so there should be no surprise that at times those foundational beliefs can be severely distorted."Yes, both Christians and scientists can be buttheads.Don't let that stand in the way of the truth.Read this book.(Did you hear me, Kansas State Board of Education?) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality book - oodles better than the paperback version
I bought this book because I am studying to be an electrician.I like it considerably more than the paperback version it is far easier to find section headings and sub-headings when you are looking for something. The paper is strong and glossy-white (as opposed to gray and flimsy in the paperback) and headings are in bold type and indented.

1-0 out of 5 stars if you have to throw away $150...
If you actually buy this book you're paying for the illustrations. Don't waste your time actually reading it, the presentation of the material is ponderous and completely unimaginative. The chapter on immunology is one of the worst I've seen anywhere.
    3-0 out of 5 stars X and Y chromosomes
A more serious omission is the absense of the x chromosome from the glossarythough that y is there, unconsciously reinforcingthat men are incomplete females?Males come equipped with beefed up sixpacks whereas the woman look like demurelittle housewives. Artists havetried to depict other races but thegender representation is pathetic. Aheterosexist pro-male interpretation of human sexuality is foundthroughout the book, which can be annoying. Some of the comments obviously written with students in mindare patronizing. The layout is repetitious andand at times quite unstimulating. The best detail was why a chicken breast is white considering its a muscle.

3-0 out of 5 stars laughable omission
How can this really be an Anatomy and Physiology textbook written by a Phd?There is not one picture or drawing of a male foreskin (prepuce). One does not have to wonder why the medical community is so ill prepared to deal with a normal male body. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the nice guy finaly finishes first
I just read the book iWoz. If you are a Mac-head, or just a computer geek who is intrigued by the origins of the PC industry, thisbook is definately a must-read. It gives a great, human approach to the subject of Steve Wozniak, inventor, and the people in his life who helped draw him out and create the Apple I, the computer that really signified the true arrival of small, affordable computers for the masses. The prose is written in a very informal and relaxed style, as if Steve is sitting across from you and telling you his story himself. I found it very engaging. I am a very tough critic, but this is definately a book I will read again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives you a great sense of the Woz.
This is an excellent book about a truly interesting and innovative man. It provides real insight into his work, his style and his personality. I had the pleasure of seeing Steve on his speaking tour and I was really impressed by how the book captures his style, tone and spirit. Steve has a real childlike quality to him which shows through alternatively as playfulness, humor, goofiness and innocence. He also has a long history with promoting education and teaching.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great Promise but Poor Delivery
The real problem with the book is that it's packaged and sold as an adult book but it's actually a children's book. Stories are toned down for the child audience and at one point, even self-censored, as not being appropriate for a "family audience," as though Woz imagines the family drawn up around father's easy chair to listen to the evening reading. As if... The book ends, as all good children's books do, with the ending that he hoped his twelve-year-old audience will be as lucky as he was...sort of a go though and do likewise.
